The fact that we have to even wonder about something like this shows how terrible and arbitrary the storytelling is.
Are you new to the Final Fantasy franchise? When have the endings (for the most part) EVER made sense. FFIX's sort of did as it was a big escape right after the fight, but let's see. We have Squall's random walk in a random desert area before getting picked up at the end of VIII, we've got VII and uh.. well it was sort of straight forward even though I still don't know where the fuck Cloud and Sephiroth ended up going. Let's not even go into X and it's fuckery.

Anyway, not starting something here, obviously. Just saying.. weird endings are what FF is known for in a way.

So you're saying that, say, in Chapter 12, you thought "yeah, we're going to go destroy Orphan, that's what we're doing in this story, that's our goal" and that made sense to you?

Destroying Orphan DOESN'T ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE given everything we know up to that point.

Stop implying that it does. I "didn't understand" the story because the story doesn't make sense. The idea that Orphan could be destroyed without the destruction of Cocoon and the killing of millions is not presented at any point in the story.

    Except for when it happens.

    Maybe.

Depending on whether millions died or not, we don't really know. The fact that I "didn't understand" it, since it doesn't make any sense, is the primary indictment of the storytelling.

I can't see how you didn't see the fight with Orphan coming. Just...seems logical. Wasn't the greatest ending, but I still enjoyed it very much and is within my top three favorite of the series. How anybody could get confused by it confuses me. Story was very straight forward and basic. Almost to much so, was hoping for some twist.

You don't seem to know the forum that well. Most I've seen around here agree with his statement. I too enjoyed it.

I figured they'd plug the gaping anus of a plothole regarding, ya know, everyone on Cocoon dying first.

I posted this somewhere else but I forget where

If anything pissed me off about the story..

Remember in the very beginning of the story, Sazh and Lightning are infiltrating somewhere and she opens a door by apologizing to it? Sazh thinks she's using a bomb. Remember that?

Yeah, never made sense. I figured, "hey, this is gonna be a plot element. It has to be, right? Maybe she's a l'Cie already."

No, no, and no. Never touched on again. Not even mentioned.

Why the fuck was this scene even in the game?

IIRC Snow had just activated some machine inside. I took that scene to just be coincidence on Lightning's part to have her apologize right as snow hit the switch to unlock the door.

I gave up after losing to Dahaka 10 times and just youtube'd the ending. Lol'd at how horrible it was, glad I didn't try and waste my time finishing it.

Keep in mind that Lightning even said that their focus "changed" because of the Maker intervening at the end before they fight Orphan v2.

The ending wasn't the best ever, but if you paid attention to the storyline, it really did make sense. At least it did to me in every possible way. Only disappointment I got out of the game was how short the ending was.

EDIT: Destroying Orphan makes sense if you paid attention to what Lightning said. Something along the lines of...

"Our focus has changed. We were all smiling in our vision, everyone was there. Including you, Fang, and Vanille."

Their Focus changing meant that by destroying Orphan, it wasn't the end of the world. So they continued doing so. I don't know how you forget that little segment, but its pretty fucking important.

Seriously....seriously?? You seemingly don't pay attention to the scenes before that and claim it pisses you off? They didn't touch it again because it was explained well before that.

Always got annoyed in Final Fantasy games and other RPGs when the final boss was a sort of enigmatic representation of evil or something, or when it was generally just someone that you didn't hear about the entire fucking game. (Worst was FF9's Necron.) Found Orphan to be a tiny bit challenging the first time around, plus he fucking Death'd me once or twice. But I didn't like *who he was* really.

The ending itself, I was actually satisfied. If you paid attention to the undertones of this game you'll notice that what happened in the end essentially begins a resolution to the conflict between GP and Cocoon which shouldn't have existed in the first place.

I like when writers are ballsy enough to kill off characters, and while we can hardly consider Fang and Vanille's end a death, it may be the last time anyone sees them.

While cheesy the reunion with Dajh and Serah was rewarding.

What wasn't rewarding was basically any fucking ending at all for either Light or Hope. I wanted something to happen with Light and it fucking didn't.

If you paid attention you would have realized that they revealed that killing Orphan would never 'Bring the maker and kill everybody". Thats what the Fal'Cie wanted to happen as a result, but that wasn't the method. They wanted to 'start over' and end their existence coddling humans.

By killing Orphan, Cocoon falls to pulse. Thats the only cause-effect here. The cause of Cocoon hitting Pulse would be the planet being destroyed, everybody dieing, and presumably the 'maker' returning to put something in its place. You prevent all this by holding Cocoon up via crystal, which if you remember... the same thing happened to the lake in the beginning of the game.

It was all tied up quite nicely, actually. If you don't like it, that's your call. Personally, I thought them all turning to Cieth at the end would have been the better HOLY SHIT ending.

I remember dying to fucking random packs of mobs once in a while, I remember dying to the first version of bart and fighting him for like 10 minutes... I remember playing legend of dragoon and the divine dragon and last bosses being a bitch when I was a kid. Fucking behemoths were harder at some points.
I dunno why Bart was so hard for me. Easily the hardest boss I faced in the whole game.. Well, my setup wasn't that ideal so that might be the reason. Had much more fun that way though.

If you're really having trouble with Dahaka:

    1. wear resist equipment
    2. come into battle with a Sentinel on somebody (Fang is a good choice since you won't need it that much and her offensive power is great plus she has Saboteur too! Just the three classes you want in one).
    3. Use more than one medic if you need (Hope is a good choice since he has SYN too).

Buff up, stagger him, inflict status effects on him when staggered (he is weak to Slow when staggered)! Switch to Sentinel for damaging attacks, heal up, ???, profit. Not that hard as long as you adapt your strategy.

EDIT: Though if you struggle on Dahaka, you will HATE Bart v2.

Dude, everything you're bitching about makes sense if you paid attention.

When barth went down it enable the material manifestation of Orphan, who promptly proved that he wasn't about to give up by *ending* your focus and turning everyone into Cie'th.

And then it sure seems pretty clear to me that "the maker" took them and gave them a new focus, which was to end the reign of Fal'cie and bring the people together in happiness in a new world.

They did... like... as directly as possible without going HERE RETARD HERE'S HOW THIS WORKS.

It's really quite simple, it took all of one line from Vanille to clarify it:

"We have the power to destroy the world, that means we have the power to save it."

They understood exactly what they could do, they simply didn't spell it out until it actually happened.

    In short: pay attention.

    pwnt.

I won't lie, though. I was confused myself after watching the ending for the first time. I actually remember telling my fiancee "my god this is crazy but I am so goddamn confused." lol. Of course, instead of consulting my CE guide, which clarifies the ending, and does it well, I logged in to BG! The other ending thread sums it up very well. Which makes me wonder why you didn't consult that first, and made your own thread. Attention whore much? ;P
