I really doubt it's faster than "most laptops", unless you have no idea how to keep your laptop clear of viruses, adware, and bullshitware. Quit making retarded claims.
As for the iPad, it's useless flair right now. $700 isn't very expensive, but it is too much for what this is. I'd give it a year for the second version *cough*just like the iPhone you idiots*cough*, and I bet the $700 tag will be worth it.
All I use my laptop for is what I use my iPad for nowadays... So the iPad is definitely better for what I do with it. I have my desktop for gaming and other work. It's more of a situational purchase, I think. It's definitely more portable and easier to hold than a laptop or netbook
In terms of getting around and opening things up, say a movie then the iPad is definitely faster, because two taps get us there.
I dont really see how two taps is faster than a double click, assuming you know how to organize things well.
The laptop I bought cost $1500, so I'm not sure how I paid more there.
The iPad is faster than that laptop, which is 4 years old. It's also easier to carry around and do what I want to do with. The whole point of new technology is making things easier and more convenient, so I stand by my purchase. I won't argue with people who have clearly made up their minds.
Two reasons: portability and the ability to have a rectangle of porn in my hands. And that's that. Though, I do encourage you guys to just try one out. Might not change your minds, and I don't expect it to, but you might understand some of mine and others comments about speed, interactivity, and ease of transport.
Comparing the iPad to decked out Laptops is pretty asinine. Even comparing it to a net book is about the same. It's not really meant to replace either in my opinion. It's like a third device all on it's own. Inevitably the comparisons will always be drawn by certain people because that's what those people are familiar with.
Can you get a Laptop that has better specs for the price? Yes you can, but I did not buy the iPad to do things exactly as you can on a Laptop. I bought an iPad to experience my media in a more intimate and comfortable setting. Sitting at a desk or table to use a Laptop and trackpad/mouse feels so utilitarian at times. Cliche as it may be and sound, when using the iPad you do feel like you are having a more connected experience. This is what I mean when I say you need to experience it for yourself instead of taking the word of someone else or being close minded.
I'll use my Laptop for most of my work horse needs, & my phone for my calling/texting. When I want to kick back and relax for some browsing of the net, reading e-books, checking e-mail, and messing around with games & apps, I'll do it on my iPad.
Can I do all of that last part on my laptop? Yes, why yes I can. Do I want to go back to doing it all on my laptop after doing it all on my iPad? No, no I do not. I think the hundreds of thousands of people who also got this on day one share the sentiment.
I can't stress enough this is not for everyone, but bashing people for liking something is pretty petty. People laughed and bashed the iPhone too when it launched. 35 million units sold, and countless imitations and knock offs by other companies later, it's still going strong though. All that, despite the outright sheer hatred and unexplainable troll patterns some anti-Apple people seem to display.
What people don't seem to realize is that the iPad does not compete with laptops. If I was to buy one I'd buy it so that I wouldn't have to carry my 15" around. But yes I will stand by my idea you could have just gotten another laptop for the same price that would have offered more.
Its faster, way faster than netbooks out there for what it does. Have you ever tried booting up a Win 7 netbook? No matter how clean you keep it and how much time you spend tweaking it, it'll be slower.
I haven't used an iPad yet but I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be as fast as laptops as well, after all its an iPhone OS based system and its specifically designed for web surfing and multimedia applications.
dejet summaried it quite nicely, iPad won't really satisfy the daily needs of a typical geek but it does what its target markets wants. Great battery life for what it does, does its job fast and efficient and extremely portable. I sorta want one just so that I wouldn't have to carry multiple batteries for 10+ hour flights.
edit: oh, and +1 for bethany. Summarized it quite nicely.
Over hyped product, horrible specs, lackluster functions & expandability.
Enjoy having a paperweight.
that's why I find them pointless though
I'd like to point out I don't like to spend money on things I don't see a good justification. I am not a "tech geek" in the sense that I do severely pay attention to the price tag.
Simply put, it is not a bad item in itself, but it is not worth $700. People who think I'm bashing the product are missing that I'm not bashing it, I'm bashing the price tag it goes with. Nothing people have said about what makes it great justifies the price.
If it went down to $300 or even as high as $400 considering the apple logo, then it's more understandable.
Comfort over function, gotta love it.
