Simply put, it is not a bad item in itself, but it is not worth $700. People who think I'm bashing the product are missing that I'm not bashing it, I'm bashing the price tag it goes with. Nothing people have said about what makes it great justifies the price.

If it went down to $300 or even as high as $400 considering the apple logo, then it's more understandable.
Base model is 500 and if you aren't going to use the 3g functions you won't really need the expensive models. It does indeed sound expensive but tablet computers aren't really the cheapest gadgets around, a while ago I really wanted a Lifebook(Fujitsu-Siemens...think its only Fujitsu now) and it was around 1500$. I see your point though, its obviously not for everyone...I mean come and think of it, thousands of gadgets, laptops and other devices come out every year and you don't go buy each of them.

For me it'd be a neat toy because I could do basic stuff on it, watch movies on the go without frying my balls and having to carry 6-7lbs of stuff in a bag and...I guess I could give it to my grandma so that she could read newspaper.

That's only if you buy the 64GB WiFi version at $699. The entry level is a tad more reasonable at $499 for a 16GB WiFi version.

No matter what price point Apple launched the iPad at, some people would still complain. Value and worth are too relative to use in an argument. I'm sure everyone has things they would never pay for, nor care about.

If most of the uses of the ipad are net based, who the hell would limit themselves to wifi hotspots for making it useful? I was under the impression people wanted to take this with them places. If you just plan on using it around the house, you have your laptop or desktop pc, which both can do multiple things (play music while browsing the web, reading a ebook etc).

The only real use case I see for this other than people trying to write on it (which works badly due to it lacking palm detection), is taking it outside of the house, thus why limiting yourself to wifi kills that scenario.

Ipad faster than most laptops? Um no, unless you bought a piece of shit laptop lol.

And comparing pieces of technology which are 4 years apart is just fucking retarded. The target consumer for this product is now starting to make sense....

Edit - Btw, I have nothing against Apple; I have an Iphone and love it. I have a Droid too, love it. This thing is just a really bad Laptop with a nice screen and a high price tag. If it was $200 I would buy one for Netflix during travel.

Edit 2- Oh, if anyone bought the cheap version without 3G or whatever....just ignorant.

    Oh the irony.

I'm an apple fanboy, always have been, but the iPad to me is fucking retarded. Why they decide to launch a device that suffers from the exact same self-imposed limitations as the iPhone/Touch makes no sense whatsoever.

    Few questions:

    1. How long does the battery last? Average, or a min/max depending on how much crap you do is fine.
    2. Can you upload things to it at will? IE: Connect it to your PC, and upload files to it directly.
    3. I'm pretty sure but not 100%, it doesn't have any kind of SD card expansion?

If the answer to 2 and 3 are no, and the answer to 1 is small, lol at you.

Yeah. It's faster than my old laptop, does more (plays gifs without crashing the pc, higher quality video) and I read books on it. Compared to a similar laptop, it does the same things at about the same speed without the portability I desire. Besides, if I already own a desktop that's probably 6-7 times better than most enthusiasts own, I don't need a laptop if I have a desktop. As a college student that's just redundant to me. I have my workstation, my media consumption toy, and my phone. That's all I need. I admit, I have work to do on my articulation skills.... What I said looked pretty retarded.

Also, I can make my nexus one a 3G hotspot for my iPad, so.... Would be a waste if I can already have a connection everywhere.

Yesterday I got 10 hrs 22 minutes after watching star trek, playing plants vs. Zombies, some light reading, web browsing, and using YouTube.

You can transfer media (pictures, music, video) from the iPad to your pc during sync

There is an sd card dongle to do that

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Yes but for those that DO want those things, it's a hard sell when they can get a similar product for the same price that offers more.

I mean hell even at the low end spec you could get something like this:

    http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/noteb...1z&s=dhs&cs=19

which is a definite competitor for the price tag, and is only marginally bigger and 1.5lbs heavier.

Again I am not bashing the product, but it just doesn't add up price wise for actually functionality, and only a little bit for "comfort".

See and all that could be done on the laptop I linked, even if you picked the $350 one. Could save you money for something a little more functional!

    1. Official number is 10 hours but almost every test made so far got results around 11-12 hours with full brightness and heavy usage (video, audio, games, etc.)
When you turn wi-fi on it drops down to 9:30 - 10 hours. Generally developer estimates are higher than the test results and I'm very impressed with this so far.

    2. Yeah.

    3. It doesn't, but there is a cheap adapter for that.

    I know Ksandra, but that's a netbook/laptops.

Tablet computers are different than laptops, take these as an example.

http://www.shopfujitsu.com/www/conte...-PCS/index.php - My favorite tablet computers, if only they werent so pricey...

    http://www.dell.com/tablet

I know the examples above are more functional than iPad but iPad never intended to replace these in first place, its strictly for multimedia, surfing, basic document viewing, internet and other daily functions. If you really want functionality, you could also go with the cheaper versions of the links I've posted above.

Apple is basically trying to market iPad as a device that'll sit in your living room so that your grandma will be able to grab it, click on the large INTERNET icon and read newspapers, you grab it after a shower before leaving house, or maybe use it while waiting at a long drive-thru line...

Apple isn't marketing as a netbook replacement. Will it be successful? I have no idea! But that's what they've been doing so far. I'm not denying the functionality of somewhat cheaper products out there, I'm just pointing out what iPad is intended for.

You all don't have to get your bp all high because I bought something you guys wouldn't. I'm guessing learning to communicate an opinion or thought was something your parents failed to teach you.

Well really, it doesn't matter what apple intends it to do, if there's something that does it better for the same or cheaper price, then why get it? Being different =/= automatically better or a need. It's almost like tricky advertising by apple in this case. They know the iPad can't compete with minis so they try to market this as being "something else".

Apple is basically trying to market iPad as a device that'll sit in your living room so that your grandma will be able to grab it, click on the large INTERNET icon and read newspapers, you grab it after a shower before leaving house, or maybe use it while waiting at a long drive-thru line...
Which brings back to my original point that the price tag just doesn't justify what you are describing. You are essentially paying hundreds of dollars more just so it boots faster, which to me is again really silly. Maybe not for some, but it just screams a waste of money to me.

Not really exactly what I was asking.

Does it have stupid video format limitations? I remember Itunes refused to let me upload movies to my touch unless I converted them into some retarded format.

Can you upload pdf's, and other standard ebook formats? Although I don't think it matters much, at 10~12ish hours of battery life, although not a HUGE issue, is a bit of a letdown if I were to use this as an e-reader. meh

To people that like their ipads, good for you, I'll pass.

Probably has the same video restrictions, though I'm not totally sure. All ebooks are in the epub format, and kindle books are usuable through the kindle app. Books in those format back up to your computer, if that's what you mean.

Not for anything, but how people stand by the price tag for the ipad is just beyond me. It can work, if it was priced right. It just makes me think of this.

Stupid video format limitations I guess mean iPad/iPod/iPhone MPEG-4 video. Yes, if you want to put your own videos on the device you'll have to convert them into this format. There are free programs and paid programs out there that do this for you though, so that isn't really an issue.

The iPad uses both EPUB, and modified version of EPUB. You can read e-books in various other Apps instead of the iBook store e-books. There is an Amazon Kindle App, and others.

It's true dedicated e-book readers like the Kindle get better battery life, but I'm sure as hell not going back to my Kindle. 10-12 hours is perfectly fine for what I'll be reading and doing on it. After using my Kindle nearly every day for book reading pleasure, I can safely say it will not be missed. The iPad's high-resolution, 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS display is very easy on the eyes. You can adjust the brightness and text on a whim so that the very young, and the elderly have no issues reading any e-book. All that said though, it's not just an e-reader, you get so much more.

Lastly & I mean no disrespect to you, but Julian your "To people that like their ipads, good for you, I'll pass." comment shows you never had any intention to give it a chance. It is kind of sad to be able to pass judgment upon things you have never felt or touched or seen for yourself. All I can say to that is I hope you are not so narrow minded in all aspects of your life. You may very well be missing out on a lot of things. Life is too short to have that type of mentality.

Find an Apple Store near you, or Best Buy with Demo units. Go and see for yourself what it's like. If in the end you still pass, then at least you made the informed choice yourself.
