The iPad uses both EPUB, and modified version of EPUB. You can read e-books in various other Apps instead of the iBook store e-books. There is an Amazon Kindle App, and others.

It's true dedicated e-book readers like the Kindle get better battery life, but I'm sure as hell not going back to my Kindle. 10-12 hours is perfectly fine for what I'll be reading and doing on it. After using my Kindle nearly every day for book reading pleasure, I can safely say it will not be missed. The iPad's high-resolution, 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS display is very easy on the eyes. You can adjust the brightness and text on a whim so that the very young, and the elderly have no issues reading any e-book. All that said though, it's not just an e-reader, you get so much more.

Lastly & I mean no disrespect to you, but Julian your "To people that like their ipads, good for you, I'll pass." comment shows you never had any intention to give it a chance. It is kind of sad to be able to pass judgment upon things you have never felt or touched or seen for yourself. All I can say to that is I hope you are not so narrow minded in all aspects of your life. You may very well be missing out on a lot of things. Life is too short to have that type of mentality.

Find an Apple Store near you, or Best Buy with Demo units. Go and see for yourself what it's like. If in the end you still pass, then at least you made the informed choice yourself.
I do not know about you or anyone else, the idea of reading on a PC(and that is what this is) just sounds bad. When I read a book it never hurts my eyes. Read anything for a decent amount of time on a PC and it screws with you. I cant say why but for me it does.

Most people who stare at a screen all day will side with me on this one I think.

    you also missed html5.

to the jojoo guy ~_~ that seems a tad high priced as well, hell its the same price as the ipad. It does have flash tho, so it is a true browser I guess.

Apple bashing is the new trend. When Microsoft literally had no competition 18-year old kiddos with rebel souls were bashing MS to the eternity. Oh and there was PlayStation bashing by fucktarded so-called-techies who kept comparing a fucking game console specs to their shitty computer in their sig banners.

Now sucking MS cock is the new trend.

The moment you, any of you step outside of your house there'll be insecure people critical of your hairstyle, clothes, the home appliances you buy, the food you eat and everything else. Some'll think you are a fucking moron for eating from McDonalds, others will think you are an imbecile for paying to a Subway sandwich or simply the shoes you wear, the car you drive.

If you think its worthwhile, buy it. Otherwise don't. Tablet devices cost SHITLOAD of money regardless of your brand preference so stop crying about the 100 bucks you could make by not threadshitting here and actually doing some work.

That said, I'm going back to work!

EDIT: And no, I'm not going to buy an iPad.

Before it came out, it was speculated that the iPad would cost around $999 for an entry level model. Apple beat those analyst's expectations by $500. Again, as stated by myself before; no matter what they set the price as people would still complain about value.

I'm in no way saying that if you can't afford this you should not pay your rent or go hungry for a month to buy one. On the contrary I admit fully this is a luxury item plain and simple. Don't go into debt just so you can be comfortable surfing the net and reading your e-mail.

However, it just so happens that Apple's main demographic is the middle, to upper-middle class and beyond. Some people out there tend to hate what they are envious of and cannot afford. Perhaps one could argue it's this vocal minority spewing the Apple hate rhetoric and fanaticism?

A friend of mine thought the no flash was an instant no buy for them. After messing around with one, they made the leap though. You can't expect something created with Intel's X86 chip architecture in mind, to keep up with technology and run on ARM architecture flawlessly. Adobe and Apple have fought back and forth for years over Flash being the biggest broken link in Apple's little ecosystem of stability. I don't really blame Steve Jobs and the people at Apple for wanting to keep it off their devices if they have the choice.

Microsoft and Dell, and other computer companies all hate or have issues with Flash, but it's widespread use means they just have to deal with it. Adobe rested on it's laurels with it for so long, now with a newer version on the horizon you can't help but wonder if the ship has already sailed.

For Apple to take such a stand against Flash makes other companies take note. There is a reason why sites are scrambling to offer HTML5 versions of their content. Like it or not, Apple sets the trends at times that the other companies follow. It was Apple that made sound cards standard on computers, and it was Apple that pulled out the disk drives and made CD-drives standard a year before everyone else.

This is not the end of Flash. This is not the beginning of the end of Flash. This is the end of the beginning of Flash's dominance on the web. I for one am happy as hell with that, as for all it's good it's also caused me a ton of problems over the years on a multitude of systems from PC to Mac.

That was sort of my point. I'm not planning on getting either, but I stumbled across an ad for that tablet yesterday. Storage isn't as high, and it's a little heavier, but it's also a bigger screen and it has a USB port (so storage wouldn't be as much of an issue--just connect an external or a thumb drive).

I hate arguing over pointless things like this, I really do.

I'm well aware there's software that can convert videos, but it takes a good 15-20minutes to convert one piece of 40min video, it's just.. not worth it for me. I don't want to have to reconvert all my videos, waste double the hdd space (I have 4 TBs on my desktop, about 80% full) just to watch it on an i_______.

But in the end, why would I want to watch video on a tiny screen, when I have a nice TV set up in my room, and hooked up directly to my computer? All I have to do is open whatever I want to watch on it, and bam. No headaches, nothing. The way my life is structured right now, the only time that I really want to watch anything is when I'm at home. I'm not going to pull out my ______device to watch TV in the middle of a class, or when I'm hanging out with friends. And for the times when that does happen (Airplane, bus rides, car rides, etc), I have a very nice Laptop that can take care of that for me. (12 hours of battery life, 8ish while playing video, more than enough.)

Also, I'm a poor college student, living off of financial aid. It's not that bad though. Since my parents make no money, I'm getting a full ride, and a bit of spending money as well. A $500(700?) device wouldn't be completely out of reach for me, but it would have to be pretty fucking amazing.

Like I said earlier, I'm in the market for an e-reader. I like reading, I like books, but they just don't work for me. I have to buy them, and if I end up not liking them, waste of money and space. I also don't like having to carry them around. So yeah. An e-reader seems like the perfect solution for me, the problem is just finding one that I feel would actually be fully worth the money, and exactly what I want.

After reading a few of the ipad reviews, I was actually shocked, because it looks almost like just the kind of device that I've been looking for. Except, that it has all of the issues that apple products have.

I've owned an itouch for quite a while now, and unless things have changed a lot (I doubt it), it's just not the type of product for me. It's like, Apple forms this tiny little bubble around their users. They make up their own formats, which are closed and only work for them, for no reason besides just wanting to keep it closed. I guess you could say it's "smart", but in the open-source type of community that we live in now, it's ridiculous. To access the filesystem on my itouch, I had to jump a ton of hoops and had to SSH into the thing, just to be able to add a few files I wanted on there. That's stupid. If hackers hadn't even figured out how to jailbreak it and how to let you access it, I probably wouldn't have even be able to do that. (I might not be 100% correct on what I've said, if any of it is wrong, please feel free to correct me)

For the normal user, this stuff probably doesn't mean anything, they're in that little bubble, and that's fine. If I were to pay $500 for a piece of technology, I would like to be able to access the entire product and use it for what I should be able to with it, not what Apple designates as their tiny bubble.

dunno why I posted this lol

Um, I thought it didn't have an USB port? (I could be wrong, what do I know? Just what I thought)

I don't know where you are getting these, but the Mac communiuty isn't anything like that. Try saying that in, say, Macrumors and you'll get flamed to hell and probably get banned.

Sure, idiots like that are everywhere but they don't represent the entire community.

The Apple brand elitism is built right into their advertising (see: mac vs pc), it trickles into its fanbase pretty evenly in my experience. If I had a nickel for every time some smug iphone or macbook user has commented on my droid or zune with some boilerplate "it just works" bullcrap I'd have at least a dollar.

I understand that not every apple user is like that, but the company itself sure does seem to want to encourage that kind of behavior.

Unfortunately the Mac vs. PC ads were necessary for breaking into the market, the MS domination. A simple ad campaign that showed off the specs of the computer wouldn't work back in the early 2000s. I see it as a business decision, their marketing team came up with this campaign that pointed out the strengths of Macs and weakness of Windows in a not-so-nice fashion. Back in the day when every computer sold came bundled with Windows installed, MS didn't even need to advertise at all, they were just enjoying their monopoly.

I don't like Mac ads as well but one way or other they had to come up with something aggressive/different. People who repeat "it just works" crap are just regular users that wouldn't be any different using a PC. The guy who still uses IE 6 today, or the one that thinks anti-virus software are useless morphs into a "it just works" guy when he is given a Mac, typical regular not-so-informed user.

Id rather not make it a apple bash(Well guess I sorta did with the pic I posted) but the way people talk about how this is anything new/worth its price just shocks me to no end.

A fair price? ~$350 for the 1st maybe 600 for the best. It still seems high for what little the thing can do.

Its not a fact of fanboy or not, its a fact that it does nothing new, it does not combo anything to make it a all-in-one item. Mac has a good track record but they dropped the ball on this one.

Their PCs are safer/faster then your average none gamer PC
Their I-pods where/are still some of the best MP3 players
Their I-phone was a great leap in cell phones
Their I-pad does nothing new/adds nothing.

This is why it angers me to see how people are blindly following Apple. Yes for a user that does not play games, does not type, does not have a laptop, does not watch hulu, this can be a good thing.

edit: who the hell just said its a middle call item? things run for 1,000+ thats not far under what a normal PC runs with the same specs.
