I just wanted to inform you all that the earth is currently not shaking in Virginia, but I fucking wish it was so I could get a breeze going or some shit. It's hot as fuck here. Am I perched on any particularly hazardous volcanoes, faultlines, or other impending earth-based disaster waiting to happen that I should be aware of?

The New Madrid fault lies in western Kentucky and a major earthquake has been predicted for years. The 1812 earthquake along the New Madrid fault was the largest in U.S. history; it caused the Mississippi River to temporarily run backwards, with major damage as far away as Lexington, Kentucky. The quake caused church bells to ring as far away as Charleston, SC. Everyone east of the Mississippi River except for New York and New England felt the temblor, which was stronger than the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake, estimated to have been between 7.8 and 8.3 on the Richter scale. This is also the anniversary of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake: One of the largest natural disasters in U.S. history, it caused 3,000 to 5,000 deaths, while 508 city blocks burned to the ground. The last large New Madrid Fault temblor was in 1895. It registered 6.8 on the Richter scale and was more intense than the memorable 1994 Northridge, California earthquake.

It's not absolute, but generally, where there is a mountain range, there is a geological force nearby. The Appalachians count.

    Whats the equation for that?

The raging in this thread is amazing, kinda nice living in NJ not having to deal with the quakes... but as mentioned, fuck this pollen this year. Think there is some major faults around here (east coast) that haven't had activity in forever, looking forward to that. Speaking of future disasters, when's yellowstone exploding.

Thanks. Is that considered a separate incident or still considered an aftershock? How long after an initial quake are subsequent shakes considered aftershocks?

Different fault line = different quake, same fault line shortly after another quake/aftershock, and lower magnitude = aftershock.
