I couldn't do it. I have gone without a job for a couple of months and nearly went insane. I have to work in order to feel accomplished or useful. Sitting at home just doesn't cut it for me. Luckily, I found a shop owned by a woman and ran by women so the pay difference between men and women doesn't really affect me.
The women's draft hasn't been enacted yet because not enough women are pushing for it. The only way we got the right to vote and (semi)equality in the workplace is because we pushed for it. Not very many women are.
What purpose does registering for a draft serve when there is no draft in the US and more than likely there will never be a draft again?
I've had to do jury duty before. Good enough?
It's the principle, if you ask me. I shouldn't be denied federal aid because I choose not to sign up for selective service if we're never going to use the draft 'ever again.'
re: OP
Feminists would argue that war and violence as a social phenomena in general are largely a product of patriarchal male dominated society and that we wouldn't have those problems if only we had a more female centric culture, values, and more feminist female leaders. Which is more or less completely fucking divorced from reality but at least it avoids the double standard you brought up.
Amen. I waited until I got mailed threats and was denied a driver's license until I signed up. It's bullshit. It's the principle, if you ask me. I shouldn't be denied federal aid because I choose not to sign up for selective service if we're never going to use the draft 'ever again.'
So wait. You guys are really pissed that you had to fill out an essentially useless, meaningless form that will most likely never affect you in any way and your argument is that women should also have to fill out this useless, meaningless form to keep shit even steven? You do realize that once you start arguing any point like this because it's the principle of the thing, and then talk about or agree with the notion of women being "divorced from reality," you've already lost, right?
How can you be so sure that it will never be used again. The last two generations have both had drafts. My grandfather and my dad both were drafted. If something really terrible happened, I can guarantee a draft would be started. That being said, yes I'm pretty upset I could be denied aid, be denied a licenses, and go to jail for not doing something my female counterparts are not required to do as citizens of this country....
Motherfucker we have been waging wars on two fronts for as long as I can remember, and there has yet to be a draft.
Let's look at this for a bit:
Your female counterparts are usually raised with the colour pink, flowers, and barbey dolls, as opposed to cars, guns, and toy soldiers.
Most women aren't interested in the military, you might somehow find a relationship between this and the previous sentence.
The US military is not interested in having more women in the military.
The US military is not interested in a draft because it much likes its professional army.
From these 4 factors i conclude that you need to start a movement to end that registration thing, or just suck it up.
The entire premise is stupid, just another case of males bashing feminism for idiotic reasons.
Feminism does not see men and women as "equal". They are different, feminism understands this. This however is not why feminists are not up in arms about not being eligible for the draft. Feminism is not about ignoring all differences between the genders and demanding that women be subject to everything men are. What feminism is generally fighting for is choice. A woman's right to be able to make her own decisions about what she is and is not capable of being or doing. There's no reason anyone would ever argue for the right to be forced into doing something against their will, that is moronic, not feminist.
