Or, if you want to be truly original, don't use a name from fiction, non-fiction, games, manga, movies, foreign or domestic, and just make one up that sounds good. Or at the least, pick something that isn't already someone's name in existing creative works (brand/make/model names of inanimate but real world objects are acceptable, if you must pick a word that exists).

My name is just some hot wind in Africa. Also a car. Though it did end up being someone's name in a book somewhere, though I never knew that when I picked it.

My alpha last name doesn't even receive any hits on google. Which reminds me, if you have a name that sounds good, rolls off the tongue, is easy to pronounce, spell, type, and remember, and receives no google hits, then you've found a good name. Don't settle for existing words, characters from fiction, or dictionary words. Be unique.

My real name has no google hits except for things I personally did (or the few times it was in the news). That's exactly why I didn't use it. It would just be one more thing added to the google biography of my internet, and real, life.

Also, the reason I like my name, although it's not wholly original is because part of me would love for someone to point out that they get the reference. I love running into people who've read or have listened to the same stuff as me, as long as it's not too mainstream. Maybe I should make a mule named Daniel Cowman.

It's still really hard for me to choose a last name. For now I'm using the first name I always use for MMORPGs, then the last name is my girlfriends D&D character's last name.

I'd say they should of just left it as it was in FFXI. This way you're just gonna end up having a bunch of people with a bunch of variations of the same name. Unless they plan on putting in some sort of restrictions.

I believe that the only way for 2 or more people to have the same last name is with the permission of the person of the first person to have that last name. I read it somewhere but i can't remember the source.

Based on the early testing (in the original alpha thread) you can have the same first name or same last name, the combination of names is what must be unique. The only name you have claim to is your unique combination of fname and lname.

^ that is true and what S-E has confirmed. Anyone can have any last name or any first name, just the combination has to be unique.
