I think its quite funny people are against such a minor thing.
While I'm not 'OMG HELL YEH SECOND NAMES!' I think it'll be kinda cool, me and my friends have been wanting to have names that somehow relate to each other and it becomes a lot easier with second names

It adds another level of customization to your character. I've already figured out what my last name will be; I'll just use the same last name I used to use on my old pen and paper RPing characters back when I was in school.
As long as doing a /whois or /sea all works without having to type something ridiculous like "Shank Vanlandinghaminator", then I'm fine. Maybe if you could do a /sea all shank v and that would resolve. At the end of the day, I don't care to see it in the game. Maybe they'll let you just have a first name and not a surname.
Step 1: Name character Laqueshawndra McGillicuddy
Step 2: ???
Step 3: Profit.
I like. Just have to pick a last name, that's the real challenge.
I think too many people are whining about it being mandatory.
"Ohh, but people might abuse the 2 name system and come up with Cloudy McSephiroth!"
Both those names are blocked for the entirety of FFXI. So are numbers & symbols. People STILL made ridiculous knock offs. You know what percentage of the community they make up? Zero, cuz only straight up FF fanboys who started because this is an FF make names like that and they all leave when shit gets real. People screw around with a 1 name system already, two names wont make it especially worse. Typing out more names will be a non-issue with a friends list. Everything else is just complaining about having to come up with a decent sounding 2nd name. Get over yourselves.
Somehow I'm betting the last name won't have any precedence over the first name, just an extra portion to make the character feel more connected to you (you'd just /tell firstname). It'll probably allow people to use the same last names, but not the same first names. That's how I would handle it anyway - last name being more superficial in the game to keep it to what we're used to while opening up an option to show families or relations of characters to be created. Like a group of lalafell with the last name Stiltskin, headed by none other than a giant lalafell named Rumpel that makes gold thread all day.
Will be interesting to see how they handle this, but gonna doubt right now that last names will have any real importance.
My opinion is of course biased, but I don't think using popular names like "Sephiroth" or "Cloud" is the problem. The problem is more people making a retarded name out of them because they couldn't get the original.
Some names are more popular than others in real life too, but no one complains. It's the first name + surname combination that makes people unique. People aren't called xxJohnxx or whatever in real life because any number of people can have that name. Which I guess is what SE are trying to implement in FFXIV.
"Sephiroth Fourteen" or "Sephiroth Cloud" may sound retarded but if people use "Sephiroth <creative surname>" where's the harm? I've had to adopt a similar strategy when I fill in online forms where I don't want to give my real name, since Sephiroth never had a surname in FFVII.
The only time I'd use something like SephirothXIV as a username or whatever is if I'm not going to use it much or if it's not public. Makes shit easier to remember for those sites I use maybe once a month.
More than likely, all FF main character names will be blocked from use anyway like they were in XI. FFXII and XIII names aren't blocked in XI for obvious reasons. As much as I'd like to go with the "Sephiroth <last name>" combo I'll come up with something original if forced rather than create something retarded. Or use a FF related name that isn't a character. I had some cool sounding mules in XI.
Chuck Norris...
...and you will beat the game as soon as you login the first time!
To be honest you bring up a good point Cautery. We're more likely to see people trying to name themselves after celebs than FF characters. Imagine names like Lady GaGa and Britney Spears running around...
I think more customization is better, and if people wanna run around with some gay ass names like SephiCloud theThird let them. It won't bother me, but they have less chance to get invited into one of my groups, that's for sure.
Not singling you out over the others (your just the last to post it) but the reason we brought this up is because SE did implement /t [firstname] [lastname] and we arent looking forward to trying to send a /t to someone who is idiotic and made a long name.
So if your going to offer your insight at least preclude with a for beta or release versions, maybe they wont use the last or first name etc etc
as long as I dont have to type both names out to send a message. Cause you know someone is gonna name themselves after some random shit in the cthulhu mythos and who wants to type those names?
Matt Damon.
I can't decide between Black Belt and Kraken Club or maybe something else? I fucking hate the idea either way.
I don't like the idea but I guess it could be cool if you have a group of friends all with the same last name.
