It's not avoiding it completely, it's just seeing it when the opportunity presents itself. Unless the theater in and of itself is enhancing the experience (which it really isnt unless you're going to imax, 3D, or whatever) the shit can just wait. I didn't see batman begins in theaters, I did see dark knight though.
There are movies that I will pay to see regardless but I'll drag someone with me because I know theyre interested already (Kick-ass, Iron Man, Scott Pilgrim). There are movies that I would like to see but can just wait until someone else wants to (How to train your dragon. I asked someone, they said they weren't interested, so I didn't go see it. I'll ask a friend who is a huge animation geek though and she'll likely go). I'm very much the type who does shit like break out laughing in the middle of the last battle in avatar though so if I'm there alone and no one else really gets it it's a wasted experience.
