Serious legal question: How does an eviction affect my record? Does it go on my credit report or something? Would it make it a lot harder for me to find a new apartment?

I tried googling it, but I really don't trust yahoo answers for anything.

Edit: Actually I'll just ask Fair Housing tomorrow. Most of you don't live in OH anyways and it probably varies so I don't know why I'd ask here.

I just don't want this crap going on my records.

So anyway, we got a noise violation for a party one day. I was home for all of 15 minutes when it happened, but my roommates wanted me to handle the police because I was sober, so of course I got the ticket.

Anyway, I go to court. At the start of the proceedings, the judge informs you can plead not guilty, guilty, or guilty with an explanation. My last name starts with Z, and they go alphabetically, so I get to go last basically.

I had made up all of these great excuses in my head to tell the judge, but since I go last, I get to see a parade of people who also got noise violations (college town) go before me, and use up all the great excuses I had lined up. Seriously it was like 25 or so other people who got busted for noise violations.

When my turn comes up, the judge asks me how I plead. Guilty, your honor.

    Guilty? Not with an explanation?

All the good excuses were taken already, sir.

What do you mean excuses? (I dont remember his exact words here, but it was something along the lines of thinking negatively of the way he rendered verdicts)

No your honor, I'm just saying that I wish my last name started with the letter A.

At that point I was told I was being held in contempt of court and removed from the courtroom, had to meet with the judge after the open court session and had to pay an extra 200 on my ticket. (sat in a holding cell for like an hour while court wrapped up)

But here is the good part.

Because I wasnt home when the party happened, my roommates agreed that they and their friends who were at the party would cover the cost of the ticket. They had no idea I basically tripled the cost of the ticket and paid it in full anyway.

I'm not entirely positive, but I dont think it would show up on a credit report because they're not a bank and they're not a credit institution.

I thought I remembered my mom saying that when she got evicted, it was hard for her to get another apartment because it showed up in her records and credit report. Maybe I misheard or misunderstood.

Edit: Well, just because they're not a bank or a credit institution doesn't necessarily mean they wont show up on a credit report. Someone got a speeding ticket in my car (twice, in school zones, while the car had no breaks. And she works for the children's ministry at my church so you'd think she wouldn't speed around children without breaks. She wasn't supposed to be driving, but I was out of town so she felt she could get away with it). I kept getting letters saying if I don't pay they'll put it on my credit report. It was one of those camera tickets, and apparently the city traffic courts have nothing to do with those.

I also have medical bills in my credit report

It looks like the info on evictions would be requested from court. So if this doesn't go to court, I assume there wont be anything on my record. I'm going to call Fair Housing anyways to make sure.

Evictions are handled on a case by case basis, out here. Typically just depends on the landlord.

I'd imagine it's the same unless there's some random state law.

Are you Section 8? (I have to ask cause you're black)

If they want you out, they'll try anything.

Fun part is they'll probably evict you unfairly, and you'll be able to sue them in small claims for a whole happy hosts of little things.

If the landlord refuses to take full payment and the tenant can prove it, the eviction may be challenged in court. After the deadline, the landlord doesn't have to accept payment.

Shouldn't be hard to prove this; "My landlord won't take payment in full without a statement".

No, I'm not on section 8. I do receive government subsidies, but it's through something else.

    Also, thanks for the links.

    Edit:
After the deadline, the landlord doesn't have to accept payment.
Basically I need to show that the reason my payment was late was because of them, not because of me. Otherwise, what they are doing would be legal.
