westerners here really disrespect the laws; they all follow Alleya retarded mentality.
im white i have rights, they really think when they travel, they bring their culture and rules with them.
if i call the cops for every indecent act i see on the streets of Dubai, our jails would be overcrowded with drunk white people

Ignorance= above the law?
I agree 100%. If a guy from Amsterdam came to the US and starting smoking pot in public, we'd be calling him a dumbass, and he'd be thinking "wtf stupid US law".
You really need to know laws in a country before you go there. Can't be just coming in thinking laws will be the same. Even if you think it's a stupid law.
I sat here for a while really trying to find a way to criticize this, then realized that the foundation of every argument I could have made was rooted in subjective beliefs, and that members of their culture would say the exact opposite and would be just as right to do so.
What is everyone's take on the journalists that were imprisoned in NK? Pretty sure if you are ok with this in dubai you would have to be with NK's rules as well.
The journalists at least knew/expected that they could be imprisoned. It's one thing to break the law and expect that you are too awesome to be punished. It's another thing to understand exactly what you're getting into beforehand and in an ideal situation you'd be getting into that trouble as a form of civil rights protest. They also had some sort of moral argument on their side if you're into that thing unlike the right to public acts of foreplay.
Journalist issue was a little bit political.
Really, the first rule of travel is to get familiar with the general norms and laws of the destination even if you are merely travelling from a state to another one. One google search of the location + travel tips should be enough. 99% of the time for minor offenses "I didn't know sorry" dumb tourist card works as long as you don't disrespect the officers but still, just play your part and read a 1 page travel guide.
You have absolutely no comprehension of what I was trying to say.
I wasn't saying people shouldn't be punished if they break the law I wasn't saying people shouldn't take the time to learn local customs and become familiar with the law. I wasn't saying that ignorance is a defense to get you out of the consequences for breaking the law.
I was very specifically replying to Firas's generalization in the first sentence of his post.
I was merely pointing out that while many westerners might disrespect the law there might also be some who just don't know what the laws are and not knowing the law is not the same thing as willfully disrespecting it because you are a bad person. They are both bad things but they are not the same.westerners here really disrespect the laws
If you were not replying to me then, oops.
Thinking the well known laws are too unimportant to learn is still disrespectful and as such it's a poor and horrible excuse.
Your argument reminds me of the tourists who come to my country and then try to get out of trouble with the cops because " I didn't know weed was illegal here"
We aren't talking about some obscure cant step on a crack after 9 pm on a Sunday with the full moon out and light rain or your mother receives 1000 lashes law here.
We know it's a muslim country and we know that most of them have fairly strict laws usually religious based. It's also a religious derived from christianity and Judaism which means that most western citizens will have had at least some exposure to the knowledge of what would get you in trouble there. Most of those laws aren't much different than what you'd have heard about the USA (for example) having had less than 100 years ago.
his point is disrespecting a law is doing something despite knowing it is illegal. Not knowing a law is not inherently an act intended to show disrespect. For example, if for whatever ludicrous reason you couldn't say bitch on the forum and a new poster is talking about how he got dumped and his ex is a bitch, that's ignorance. No disrespect is intended to the rule. If someone who has been here and is aware of the rules is like "Bitchy bitch bitch bitch" that's being disrespectful of the rules.
These 2 British tourists must be living under a rock if they didn't expect these type of laws were in place in Dubai.
Speaking of Dubai, i wanna visit there someday. Can a non-rich person have an enjoyable time? Lol. I hear the airport is full of gold sellers.
I seriously wonder how much of Dubai's money comes from all of the fines and bail money they get every day. *lol*
on the plane, people are notified of the Arab/Islamic culture btw, just an answer to zoober's comment. so yes, most of the westerners do think they are above the law.
like the other day, a 50 year old american woman shows me the middle finger while driving (and she was wrong), iSued. but then i dropped the case cus im such a nice guy (and it was ramadhan)
absolutely. if you know peopleOriginally Posted by Vagus

You also changed your statement in this post from the last post. In the post I commented on I only commented because you implied that all westerners that break the law think they are above it and are being disrespectful. In this post you say "most" there is a big difference there and the first post I disagree with and this one I think might be more accurate.
I admit that I am very affectionate with my wife if we visited that country it might be hard for me to remember that kissing in public is not allowed. I would not kiss her in public on purpose to be disrespectful and I might know about the law but in a moment of forgetfulness I might lean over and give her a kiss.
I was just pointing out that breaking the law doesn't automatically mean they are disrespectful on purpose.
And you were very generous to drop the charges against the lady who flipped you off. I really dislike road rage people who do things like that and I might not have been so nice as you.
If your country actively courts Westerners, and they outnumber the locals 8:1, and you don't expect their customs, habits, and behaviors to follow, you're a fucking retard.
QED, Dubai locals are fucking retards.
Obviously the laws protect the beliefs and sensibilities of the minority at the cost of the majority (who ended up there by the active intent of the local leadership).
sorry i exaggerated on the first post. yeah, cant really be all westerners.
and amastacia; the locals hold the law. its not retarded.
its aligned with the regions culture too. that what makes dubai unique; the purpose is to enhance the trade ties, the economy in general and also focus on tourism. at the same time, sustain the culture of the region. the idea is beautiful in my opinion; by no means we have invited westerners, asians to our country to help us change our culture, its all business.
Visiting another culture without learning its basic rules for behavior (not going to even distinguish between laws and customs here) is an asshole thing to do regardless of what you may think about the rules. Like if a Fremen came to mah house and spit on the floor, I'd kick em' in the nyuts.
I have to agree with Firas to some extent. I think on one hand the culture and laws of a society are really important and you cannot sacrifice them for the sake of tourists. And if you did then you would probably get less tourists because when I visit somewhere I visit for the culture and customs and I don't want to visit any country and find it to be americanized and generally all fucked up. You go somewhere to experience something different.
On the other hand I also think that if people from a different culture start moving into an area en-mass eventually a countries customs and laws need to be flexible to the population that lives there.
