Chikorita wasn't (or at east I think not, I didn't think of it as an animal so much as an algae-born quadripedal homunculous), and look how that turned out.

The protagonists are supposed to be older this time around, so assuming they're around 16-17, the female is of proper age to have had her cherry popped, and walk about looking a little sleazy (hence the Daisy Dukes).

I actually like the water starter too and I agree the fire pig is pretty meh and unoriginal.

Tempted to pick the grass one this time around since it looks so badass but I don't want to break the tradition (always picked water ones so far).
