Do I really need to go on?

How, praytell, would you balance a game plagued by these problems, especially in an MMO setting? You talk about keeping it interesting with PvE content - explain to me what exactly a person would have to gain from said content, when we've already established legendaries being uncatchable? Or are you going to go for the "pokemon armor" angle?

There's no system that would possibly make sense for a pokemon MMO. PvE games need rewards based on content, not just mindless grinding against the same shit day in and day out. And if you say "Oh, it's just for the fun", then PvP becomes the real content, which brings the whole topic back full circle to the point of "console game with less features".

It's a stupid idea. You can accuse me of bandwagoning all you want, but I've been saying this for years every time it comes up.
Well you aren't thinking outside the box then. There are plenty of ways to implement a fair system that wouldn't allow the type of PVP competitive scene we have now. No I don't engage in that, because like you are saying its kinda cheesy. Same mobs everyone uses, same move sets, same setups its boring. Just a game of rock paper scissior.

That wouldn't be a bad idea... armor or some form of attachments. PVE content with additional bonuses, maybe special items you can attach to pokemon that you wouldn't normally find elsewhere. There could be some storyline or so that you progress through, missions and the like. I am thinking more of the lines of FFXI. Assaults, battlefield, besiged type events. There are a lot of things that could be done in regards to PVP. Different ways to exp that isn't the normal grind of killing same mob over and over. Using different pokemon that you like or wanted to try, something that shys away from using the same overused ones all the time.

How would pvp be the only content if its just for fun? You really don't enjoy being able to explore and catch different pokemon in different areas etc. Being able to catch them all, having your own mog house type of deal like a pokemon ranch for all your own pokemon. Being able to fly around on your own pokemon without a set path. Maybe becoming a gym leader, have people be able to challenge you.

Yeah I am geeking out here but it would be a lot of fun. The major issue to deal with would be the overused and uber type pokemon that are out there. I would think they could come up with something to counteract that. Make it possible so that the skill tree you design for your pokemon can counteract different strategies. Make strategy itself important in battles, just like the show. Being able to tell your pokemon to dodge or do something strategical to gain an upper edge on something more powerful.

There was nothing to reply to but a retort, so I gave one back. What would be so horrible about pokemon MMO then?

The fact that this game is coming to Japan this Autumn worries me that it's just another hasty copy/paste using the 4th Gen engine. They could still surprise us but I doubt we're going to see anything drastically new with Black/White other than new Pokeymans.
Couldn't agree more. The physical/special split managed to redeem a couple really terrible pokemon (lolFlareon), and really diversify the combat system. Aside from that, everything they've added since then has been a bunch of fluff (albeit nice fluff).

I really don't expect they'll have done anything to the combat system either, outside of maybe adding a couple extra moveslots and calling it revolutionary. Odds are Black/White are going to end up something of a mash-up between Platinum and HG/SS.

You didn't give a retort. "Don't buy it" isn't a counter argument, it is the mantra of pussies. I already told you why it would suck, but if you hold on for a minute I'll talk you through your weak ass replies to some other posters. If you want to know the answer right now: Making Pokemon a MMO doesn't ADD anything positive. You can get the very best out of a Pokemon MMO by battling your friends while forcing them to use ventrilo or teamspeak or irc. You don't need to bastardize the "adventure" for that. Wouldn't be worth the cost.

EDIT: Though a Pokemon game that forced you to play online would have one benefit: Cut down on the hacking, which makes trading online(even between friends) an affair in cheating. But you don't need to change the game at all for that to happen really.

I still feel weird playing 3rd Gen games, because I keep forgetting that the Phys/Spec split came in 4th Gen and not 3rd gen. It was especially bad back when Diamond/Pearl were released and I replayed Colosseum and Gale of Darkness to get the legendarys and I had already grown accustomed to the Phys/Spec split in Pearl.

I'm pretty sure BRP has stated why he thinks it's such a bad idea many times in the past not just in this thread.

I admire that you keep pushing this Pokemon MMO idea, but with the games the way they are, the developers having no experience with MMO's period it would just be a train wreck. We could discuss the "what if's" all day long but in the end, it would be best if Nintendo should just continue to improve upon the Wi-Fi features within each game rather than turn the series into an MMO. Even that is the least of the problems they should be thinking about with future games.

    Edit~ Laaaaate <_>

Why would a pokemon MMO have to be all about PVP.... Does PVE and adventure mean nothing. I can think of countless things aside from PVP that would be fun in a pokemon MMO.

It was an example of a successful MMO and using things that work. Comparison, besieged type event. A lot of pokemon vs a lot of wild pokemon, team up with friends and battle them or what not in a collaborative effort.

Why do you really need an MMO then? If you want PvP you can go online and battle other players with the current games. If you want PvE you can do that too with the current games. An offline world where you have the option to link up with other players to battle frontier, battle, trade etc is perfectly suited for Pokemon and already exists! Camping Pikachu's in Viridian Forest against a bunch of 12 y/o would be a nightmare. <_>

Well it would be a lot better graphical wise... I don't think it would be all that bad, you wouldn't have to "camp" certain pokemon, I would think they would be spread out. Different world, not having to start in the same zones the games had (kanto, johto etc) or make them really big where camping for a certain pokemon isn't necessary. I would like a MMO because I think it would be fun have that option to team up with other trainers and do missions and such like I said previously. Roaming a huge 3d (with enhanced graphics up to today's standards) and exploring or catching pokemon would be fun, they could change areas depending on day, time and all that fun stuff.

I like you Draylo, but a lot of what you're saying about a Pokemon MMO can be accomplished without making it an MMO. Sure if the game was released on PC by Nintendo they would be able to make the game a lot more visually appealing as they wouldn't be restricted by Wii/DS, but everything else you suggest (which I agree are things I'd like to see too) could be implemented into a handheld installment.

If you want to team up with people to do missions they could add a feature in a DS game, just talk to the NPC log in to the Wi-Fi and search for other people/friends doing that mission. If you wanted to start in Johto or Hoenn they could easily implement something where you choose that at the start of the game when you create your character. All this while still preserving the original offline adventure. An MMO would take so much away from the series. =/

Btw people who don't realize pokemon hasn't been changing since 1st gen(or 2nd gen, wherever your nostalgia bomb drops) shouldn't be opening their mouths at all. Moreover these changes have had a positive effect on the competitive game. A new gen will hopefully keep this up, and when it does it will remain unnoticed to those who are still stuck in 1998. More changes the better, but what does it matter! You want a time machine, not a sequel!

Draylo, you need to get your mind out of the clouds and start thinking. Don't just fantasize, but think! At most you seem to want a 3D Pokemon with better 3D graphics, which has nothing to do with being a MMO. Mario didn't need to become a MMO to become 3D. Your ideas have no rhythm or rhyme, it is just a child babbling about his last night dream. You are all over the place.

    3D graphics
Nothing to do with being a MMO...

wild pokemon everywhere, swimming, flying etc all that.
Ditto. Though if I am properly envisioning what you want(which is basically the world, on a silver platter) even a 3D pokemon is not possible. A Pokemon MMO like that wouldn't work because it would be on the....

Today's graphics that could be done easily.
    THE WII

Yesterday's graphics. Not quite ready for a combination of Coliseum and Elder Scrolls Oblivion.

have stat tree growth system instead of pure levels and people can adjust their pokemon based on the tree growth, spending points into different areas etc.
What does this have to be with being a MMO. Why oh why is this necessary anyway? Well, we already have an open system concerning stats over levels: EVs. Could that be improved on? Yes, I actually would like that a lot, but it doesn't need some arbitrary "tree" system lol. Seriously... Pokemon is not enough like WoW, let us remedy that!

With TMs, EVs, and breeding you already have a grand scale of customization going on. You would think a Pokemon MMO would USE that right?

Well that's one post, and I think that is enough thanks to Rokku's replies. "FFXI+Pokemon", hahaha, yeah, what the fuck are you thinking!? You want to make it so we can't catch Mewtwo("Catch 'em all? Wii Limitations")! We need a PARTY of others to even battle him! At no point did you justify MMO-ifying Pokemon and why it would be a good thing. Instead you did the opposite, good job.

    EDIT:

Well it would be a lot better graphical wise...
Pokemon Global did not look better than 4th Gen pokemon games. Get a prescription for some ritalin.

    EDIT:

Pokemon needs to have more complexity. More strategy. MMOs tend to have the exact opposite effect. You end up butting heads with others and in the end what happens is there is a leader who is playing a RTS using a bunch of half-player half-bots follow his strategy.

    EDIT:

From a monetary perspective why make a Pokemon MMO, when you can make FACEBOOK POKEMON. Then Miyamoto can borrow the company's prototype stealth jet to travel from Japan to US in the time between Pikachu spawn windows.

Well I am obviously not a game developer but some of those points are what I am saying.

combination of Coliseum and Elder Scrolls Oblivion.
Yes that is what I have in mind sorta, free roaming world filled with pokemon and all that.

Eh the tree system was basically just something to expand upon instead of the old level up system. If its just level up system and you can't do a lot of customizing you would level the thing to 100 and use it to plow through the entire game content. Levels wouldn't make a game like that better, a progressive system that you can customize and do things differently on your pokemon would be best (sorta like merits).

Can tell few of you dislike FFXI so I guess the types of games we are envisioning here are totally different cause we like different things. If it was in the hands of some really good developer, for a PC release, I can really see them coming up with something fun.

You want to make it so we can't catch Mewtwo("Catch 'em all? Wii Limitations")! We need a PARTY of others to even battle him! At no point did you justify MMO-ifying Pokemon and why it would be a good thing. Instead you did the opposite, good job.
See that's my type of thing, I like to play MMO's to play with other players, not really solo content or soloing much. I think a besiged type event, assault type events (specific missions you team up with others for with unique objectives) and all that, ffxi based missions would be fun ***IMO*** but is it a real stretch to see that implemented in MMO style? Legendaries are overpowered... I mean you could plow through the whole game (just like handheld) with a legendary, why make them accessible to your average player. I guess you could at some point, but idk, again im not a developer but that could be worked in somehow.

What is the thing here that is holding back pokemon from becoming a MMO in your opinions then. I can see only few really, balancing different types of pokemon (good reason for the strategy I was talking about before to put here) and idk what else.

I think it is boiling down to you guys don't really like MMOs... Maybe I am just dreaming, eh a 3D offline game wouldn't hurt much either then. I would really enjoy something oblivion like with pokemon.

Gary motherfucking Oak, are you not even reading people's replies?
You still have not provided one shred of evidence as to why it needs to be an MMO, but have instead only continued to splatter this thread with your pokemon wet dream, most of which is not even the core of pokemon games, just another MMO with pokemon pasted on top. You completely ignore any semblance of rational thought as to what is even remotely feasible in a game, and continue to wank in text form about how OMGAWESUM it would be.

every game has POTENTIAL to be an MMO if the devs think it will make money. The fact remains it does not NEED to be an MMO so any speculation is purely masturbatory to your fanboy ego.

I don't get what the big deal would be, you guys act like you lose something if they were to make it a MMO.
