PDT is going to win in the majority of instances. Things like Koenig Cuirass reduce more damage than people give them credit for, but you're still looking at a decreasing returns curve when PDT shoots up nicely.
As for Seiryu's Kote vs Darksteel Mittens +1... I'm going to say without doing the math on it out of pure speculation that S Kote is probably universally better if the AGI does anything towards your damage reduction additionally (relevant for some of the jobs on SK's job listing certainly).
The only job can see actually benefiting from Seiryu's is WAR, and we all know what its like trying to increase your parrying rate.

Random Question Thread X: More Opportunities for Neo to be Wrong About Things
I actually have a..random question. You may find hypocrisy with a slue of confusion when reading this post. Perhaps consider a shot of tequila before reading.
Now, obviously the role of a full PDT set is to reduce damage taken. But to what end is it worth the decrease in damage taken? Looking for opinions on the issue.
For instance, my SAM PDT set is based upon taking less damage, while still doing damage. Most sets I see are just full -PDT. Arhat+1 head/body, Darksteel+1 hands/legs, Askar feet, Jelly/lol-not-Defending Ring-slot-2, and so on and so forth.
Now, this may be fine and dandy if you are looking purely to survive long enough for a tank to pull hate. But with the absolutely current status of FFXI, where SAM comes across as the ideal tank, is this really the best way?
My current set is a bit different. I sacrifice several PDT pieces in the interest of haste. Dusk+1 gloves, Byakko's haidate on mobs that can't otherwise one-shot me, etc. Is this generally acceptable, or am I doinitwrong?
What's the lowest amount of people you can 'comfortably' low-man Tyger with, and what set-up?
The kind of PDT you're describing is mostly used for people who try to tank SAM/WAR(which is usually dumb, IMO).
SAM-tanking generally means SAM/NIN, and using shadows to mitigate damage the same way any other tank would. In such situations, PDT only becomes useful when, for some reason, shadows are completely wiped, or a TP move will ignore them. Those situations don't really call for trying to fit damage-output into your mitigation set.
Monk feeds more TP than most, if not all DD jobs. Don't let SB fool you.
Yeah, 99.999% of my playtime on SAM is consisted of /NIN'ing it up, so I can see the idea here. But what I'm really getting at, will the extra -5% PDT from sacrificing Darksteel+1 hands/legs really outweigh the +9% haste from Dusk+1 hands & Byakko's Haidate, in the interest of enmity accumulation? Of course this all assuming pro healers who won't care one way or another. I roll deep, son.
Personally, I don't think its significant enough to warrant nitpicking, so I go with whatever is going to reduce the most damage when shadows go down.
But again, unless you're fighting something that constantly wipes shadows, or attacks too fast, its not going to come up very often. Juggling Utsusemi with marches and haste is pretty easy.
It depends on what you need. For weaker hitting things that won't possibly kill you, you may want to use a mix of your best pdt gear (arhat's, jelly ring), and leave your better dd gear on (kitty pants, dusk, etc) . If you are in risk of dying then you may want to use full pdt gear, possibly even including earth staff.
I remember there being a problem with clearing your system cache on 360's and that if you did, you'd have to reinstall FFXI. Is that still the case? Also, anybody know if there are compatibility issues with larger hard drives and older 360's? I have a 20 gig and want a bigger HD, but I don't want to buy one and find out it won't work, transfer, etc.
Anything that warrants even the occasional switch into an Earth Staff is better handled by a DRK, their enmity isn't dependent on their damage output.
So Genbu's Kabuto is definitely >> Darksteel Cap+1 for Bard?
Currently sits at 276 Def (Befor protects), 65 Vit and 42%/47% PDT (Day/night)
(DS+1 cap, orochi, DS harness, DS+1 hands, patronus, jelly, cheviot, goliard, suzy sune ate)
Swapping DS harness to osode > -3PDT +14 Def
DS+1 hands to Skote > -2PDT +11Def
Kabuto I'd say so. Wouldn't make the other two swaps though.
Same. You have a lot of base PDT.
