Oh, Iunno, I've always liked darker things
real easy for 14 year olds who get knocked up by their stepdads to just go to another state
Oops. If they can handle aborting the baby they're surely able to handle giving it up for adoption.
I like how on the same topic you've argued against big government and for the government telling people what they can and cannot do to their bodies on the basis that they can "handle it".
I often clinch my PC muscles in excitement when Priran replies with an image.
your pc muscles must be in a state of tetanic contraction
Because of this they often call me La Tetanic
The govt. isn't telling them what they can do with their bodies. That's nothing but an incorrect framing of the issue. I really don't care to debate abortion though since I don't necessarily think either side is wrong. Until it can be determined when life begins it's nothing but two sides arguing where the line should be drawn on a spectrum.
My point was abortions don't simply become illegal if Roe v. Wade is overturned.
Cue argument about it being the government telling them what they can do with their bodies.
until we can transplant an embryo from a victim to a rapist to carry to term, I think you really have no argument when it comes to the legality rape->abortion
in fact I'm actually pretty surprised you're trying to make the argument against it.
They've been telling us what we can't do with our bodies for some time. And don't forget alcohol and tobacco laws, and such. Even suicide is illegal, and if you don't succeed you could go to jail (albeit for the lesser charge of attempted suicide) and gain a criminal record, thereby ruining your life.
I think outlawing a drug is ridiculous too, but telling someone they can't take a certain drug and telling a woman in the name of your religion (not theirs) that they can't abort an unwanted pregnancy because carrying it to full term and giving their child up for adoption probably won't fuck up their life aren't even the same order of magnitude intrusive.
Actually (and I'm being totally serious) the ways laws are written suicide itself is not illegal, but attempting it is. It's one of those weird quirks in how the statues are worded. But I digress..
You do make a good point in bringing up alcohol, tobacco or drugs though and I agree - usage in itself should not be illegal. However I do believe that when it comes to commerce (sale, distribution, and potency) or safety (use while operating machinery, driving, etc.) there is need for legal definition or regulation. Of course one could say the same for abortion; should where such services are offered and the methods used to perform the procedure be regulated? Well they already are in a manner of speaking.. you need to go to a clinic or hospital that offers the service (and they have the right to not offer such service it's their business), and it has to be done by a trained professional. But the final decision to have the procedure done should be a private, individual one without interference from the government.
The political spectrum is much better shown as a 2-Dimensional graph with one dimension as personal freedom, and one dimension as economic freedom. THe only problem is the design of the graph. This graph has one such design:

Altogether it just seems like the main (or only) difference between moderate liberalism and moderate libertarianism would be on Keynesian or Friedmanite economics.
