XBOX 360 Repair: Red Ring of Death

So I finally got the old RROD yesterday(3 blinking red lights). I tried a few troubleshooting methods(disconnect and reconnect everything/detach HDD) all to no avail. I checked on the XBOX website and apparently my warranty ran out about 2 years ago. From what I read an out of warranty repair costs $100-$150, so I figured I might as well try to fix the thing myself.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm not exactly familiar with the inner workings of an xbox or computer but after watching a few "how to" youtube videos it doesn't seem too bad. I also ran across this site(http://jamesdean3redlightfix.com/?hop=clickwatch) which charges $30 for an ebook and videos on exactly what to do. Any tips or helpful links would be much appreciated.

My friend fixed my old 360's RRoD and Overheating (2 Red Lights) issues by replacing the X-Clamps and using the heat gun fix. He has also fixed about 5 other 360s using the same methods.

Should be able to find the tutorials by googling, llamma.com is usually good source iirc.

I read the towel method does more harm than good

llamma.com's detailed explanation(http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair...-clamp_fix.htm) seems pretty complicated and requires quite a few parts >.>

Yea, you may have to buy a 360 fix kit but iirc it's much cheaper than any other alternative.

3 red rings means generic hardware failure. Im a resident assistant at my university and one of my residents had this happen. We tried out my power brick and his xbox did not turn on with the 3 red rings.

If you can, borrow someone else's power brick and test it out to see if it works.

Tried a friend's power brick, no dice. Going to order the parts from Llamma.com and bust the shit open next week.

Amazing, I was going to post this topic tomorrow. My Xbox red ringed this weekend, making this my 4th red ringed xbox.

I have it laying in pieces at the moment, waiting to find a Torque 9 screwdriver to separate the motherboard from the casing (Which is impossible to find around here for some reason).

What I'm going to try, since my Xbox was horizontal, is replacing the heat sinks on the bottom chips with pennies wrapped in electrical tape. From what I read, that is one of the main causes of the 3 red lights, and what the x-clamp fix is supposed to troubleshoot.

Edit: Eh, I don't think its called a heatsink, but the bottom chips have some kind of puddy or something attached to them to divert heat. And I believe they went faulty.

An out of warranty repair is free if your Xbox is suffering from RROD or an E74 error. Other out of warranty repairs do cost money.

Go to xbox.com/support and select repair your console on the left menu. After that, follow the steps to get your xbox registered, and they will give you a cost assessment. I recently sent back my elite that RROD'd and got a brand new one back, manufactured only a few days before my package came in, which would explain why it shipped from out of state.

Don't fuck with any of the "fixes" for RROD, since MS will fix it for free out of warranty for 3 RROD or E74.

Edit for above post: Thermal Paste. If you're going to replace the heatsink and paste, just use Artic Thermal Silver. http://www.arcticsilver.com/
Also, if you open your Xbox, while you might have had a free fix, you WILL ruin your chances at one from MS. You also run the risk of completely bricking your system with static electricity, or just fubaring the shit out of it with loose screws/bad screwdrivers.

    1. Go to Walmart.
    2. Buy a new XB360 console to match your own (white or black)
    3. Go home.
    4. Go on Microsoft Word or any word processing program. Download a barcode font pack and use one that looks closest to the XB360 style under the serial number.
    5. Type in your NEW XB360's serial code into the word processor, copy pasta an image of it into paint, type in your serial number above it so it looks similar.
    6. Print on sticker paper, cut to fit your OLD XB360 system.
    7. Walk into Walmart the next day with the broken XB360 in the new XB360 box.
    8. Ask for your money back. If they refuse cause it's been opened, get another one.
    9. Go back the next day with the new sealed XB360, get your money back from someone else.
    10. Ruin Walmarts Economy.

I have experience on fixing my rrod xbox. Used llama guide and some kit with thermal paste too. But the thing is, it won't last really long. I usually can play like 2~3hrs straight then it goes rrod again. And again, I had to repeat the process to fix it. I have to re-fix my xbox like 2~3 times per week then I just gave up playing my xbox lol. This may only happened to me though. I play Tales of Vesperia at that time so its impossible to play it short because I need to grind some grade points.

first you should get the error code for it. when you turn it on and get 3 red rings hold down the sync button, and then press eject 4 times. each time you will get a different number of flashing lights. 4 flashing = 0 3 flashing = 3 2 flashing = 2 1 flashing = 1
put those numbers together and post your code, some are much easier to fix than others. I personally fixed several 0110 xboxs by just doing the penny trick(stick a stack of 2 pennies under each ram chip), and they've been working for over a year now

Not always true for RRoD... they only cover upto like 3 years from the original purchase price.

My xbox was declined warranty work for RRoD as it was a first gen, bought when they were first released. Ended up fixing that sucker myself lol

You positive on this? I have had this xbox for 5ish years now with no RROD, the Microsoft website says my warranty ran out in 2008. Every single thing I have read on the site says that one DOES have to pay for any out-of-warranty repair.

Q: My console shows three flashing red lights on the Ring of Light, or an E74 error message is displayed on the screen. Am I covered for warranty service?

A: Microsoft covers repairs for the three lights flashing red on the Ring of Light or the E74 error condition for a period of three (3) years from the original purchase date of the console. If you are out of the initial three year warranty period, you can still receive console repair service from Microsoft for three flashing red lights or E74 for a fee.
Now, on the page where you choose to have them send you a shipping label/box my quote was $0.00, so I am still confused. I really don't want to see a $150 charge on my credit card when I send it to them.

They added an extra 3 years on for RRoD. So if you're like me and got yours at launch, paying Microsoft $100+ is not an ideal solution.

You're entering your CC why? Cause I got my box three and a half years of go, out of warranty and all, was all covered, not required to enter my CC or anything. It even gave me the red out of warranty indicator.

Just print the shipping label, take the box minus hard drive to UPS, and you'll see it back in two weeks. Or you can wait for their shipping box, and mail it off.

I have repaired my launch console twice, once in 2007 and again in 2009. Neither time did i pay a dime. 1st time I got my console, but repaired. This most recent time I got a refurb with a new serial number.

I will say that this second time i thought I would have to pay as the site told me it was going to cost me $99. However, when i called the 800 number the customer rep asked a few questions, determined it was the E-74 error and repair cost and shipping cost was waived. He DID say that they were not doing email shipping labels anymore and that i would get a coffin in the mail.

1 day later I got an email with a shipping label... so turnaround was that much faster.

I would at least call them, as I am sure that you could get your repair cost and shipping cost waived due to they type of error you have.

You can take the warranty sticker off without breaking it by heating it up with a hairdryer, and just put it back on later.
