I was wondering how serious of an offense this would happen to be (not me btw lol or I wouldn't be here typing this) and if anyone has dealt with or seen this, how much time is associated with this. How good of a lawyer is needed, ect?

And no, I definitely do not approve of the conduct, not at all. I'm just wondering what will most likely end up happening to the guy, as I have known him since kindergarten. While he is my friend, he should have known and acted better. I'm just curious as to what will happen and I am worried about his mother, she has enough stress w/o having to deal with this shit.

If it involves battery, then it's pretty serious, not to mention the strangling part. Advise your friend or whoever to get a lawyer and to stop choking people.

Domestic violence, even if it's a misdameanor will fuck you up pretty bad. My brother got screwed pretty hard a couple days after he turned 18. Got drunk with his girl, passed out, and dumb bitch stood over him slapping him to wake him up and he socked her in the jaw. Her mom pressed charges. Due to that and his plea, had a gun prohibition put on him. He finally got it resolved state side a few years ago so he could go into the army, but when him and his wife (different girl) went to get gun permits to buy hand guns, his got denied due to the domestic violence charge, even though it was wiped.

As for time, I think he got 1-2 weeks in the can, with credit for timed served and something like 2 years probation. It did lead to him eventually getting scared straight, and doing a bunch of research to find out how to get the gun prohibition removed so he could enlist in the military. But honestly I think he got off a little lucky as it was right after he turned 18. If it happened a week earlier, it would have been sealed with his juvinille record. Most first time cases if it's misdamenor level is 1-6 months in jail, 1-2 years probation, and some time in anger management and AA/NA meetings if you have a history of drug/alcohol abuse.

To actually answer you're question, I knew a guy who ended up trying to choke his ex-wife with a phone cord and he actually got off with I think two years under house arrest and a pretty significant fine. The real fucked up part is he got back together with her, but she left him again for a dude 30 years older than her and took half his shit again, which is why he tried to kill her in the first place. I think his official story was he blacked out and had no memory of actually strangling her.
