Ousted IW founders Sign With EA, now called Respawn Entertainment.

    http://kotaku.com/5515061/ousted-mod...-former-rivals

The drama involving the creators of one of the biggest franchises in gaming continues as Jason West and Vince Zampella, the fired former lead creators of Modern Warfare 2, have formed a new company, Respawn Entertainment. EA, their formal rival, is backing.

The Monday morning news announcing the new company follows a Friday that saw Activision, the mega-publisher that fired Jason West and Vince Zampella from their leadership positions at Modern Warfare development studio Infinity Ward, suing the ousted creators. Activision has accused the duo of misdeeds and subterfuge designed as an alleged attempt to "steal the studio."West and Zampella had sued Activison a month prior.

But today the two creators are announcing a new company and an exclusive publishing deal with Activision rival Electronic Arts. The new company, based in Encino, California, will make games for the EA Partners label, an arrangement that means it will remain an independent company from EA. West and Zampella's former studio, Infinity Ward, remains wholly owned by Activision.

"Respawn Entertainment marks a fresh start for Jason and me," Zampella said in a statement. "For the past decade we led a great development team and poured our hearts into creating an epic game franchise. We're very proud of what we built – and proud that so many millions of fans enjoyed those games. Today we hope to do it all over again — open a new studio, hire a great team, and create brand new games with a new partner, EA."

"We're excited," West said. "Now that the team is in control of the games and brands, we can ensure that the fans are treated as well as they deserve."

While West and Zampella's experience has recently involved military first-person shooters, including EA's Medal of Honor series, which they worked on prior to handling Call of Duty and Modern Warfare for Activision, they offered no details on the new game.

The release indicated only that "the company will focus on creating state-of-the-art gaming experiences for global audiences."

Kotaku will have more on this story as it breaks. For a recap of the latest events in the imbroglio involving Activision, Infinity Ward, West, Zampella and now EA, check out Kotaku's recent recap.

Infinity Ward has lost another key employee today, as programmer Jon Shiring announced his resignation.

Shiring announced he was leaving the Modern Warfare developer on Twitter today, saying "After almost 6 years at Infinity Ward, I resigned today. I'm incredibly proud of everything we accomplished and I'm going to miss everyone."

Shiring has been at Infinity Ward since June 2004, serving as programmer on Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2. His personal website also shows that he worked at Namco Hometek prior to its closure.

Infinity Ward's two founders announced a new studio, Respawn Entertainment, this morning. Two additional key figures left the company earlier this month.

It is unclear if Shiring's resignation is related to the formation of Respawn. 1UP has reached out to Shiring for clarification, and will update this story if any new information becomes available.
I sure hope he can find a job somewhere.

Kotaku updated that same story, saying they lost not one but two employees today at IW. Prepare for the downfall of the old IW! Hopefully EA gives these guys a lot of creativity like they say they will, kinda like how Bioware can do whatever they want with little to no interference. Excited to see what they can make.

Hilarious thing is that Activision is filing a counter-suit and citing Modern Warfare 3 development as one of the key reasons they should win.

They really are fucking greedy. They sound like an evil railroad guy.

OMG DONT TAKE OUR MODERN WARFARE 3 THIS HAS DELAYED IT! MW3! MW3! MONEY! MW3!

I don't know if you can call Activision evil when the other guys left to make a company that is fully backed by EA. That's like ditching out on Asmodeus just to join up with Beelzebub, in fact, it's more like leaving either of those and joining up with the Day Star himself.

    Even more today!

Call of Duty creators and Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward shrinks again today, as more key talent behind the billion first-person shooter franchise jumps ship. Sources close to the studio tell Kotaku of four new departures from the troubled developer.

A pair of Modern Warfare 2's lead designers, Steve Fukuda and Zied Reike, are said to have left the Encino-based Infinity Ward today. Fukuda joined the studio in January 2002, according to his LinkedIn profile, after leaving 2015, Inc., the developer of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and former home of Infinity Ward founders Jason West and Vince Zampella. Rieke had also been with Infinity Ward since the formation of the studio.

Both Fukuda and Rieke were listed in the Writers Guild of America award nomination for Modern Warfare 2's story, a group that also includes former IW staffers Todd Alderman, Mackey McCandlish and Jason West.

According to those same sources, programmer Rayme Vinson and lead artist Chris Cherubini have also left the studio.

Yesterday, we learned that more longtime Infinity Ward employees left the developer, the same day that former studio heads Jason West and Vince Zampella announced their new venture Respawn Entertainment.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward continues its slow crumble today with the departure of two more key team members, sources close to the studio tell Kotaku.

    http://kotaku.com/5517346/todays-upd...eloper-bailout
Longtime Infinity Ward employees Mark Grigsby and Paul Messerly have both left the studio, the team's lead animator and lead character animator, respectively. Grigsby had been with Infinity Ward from 2005, spending more than five years at the company. Messerly was there from the very beginning, moving from former Medal of Honor developer 2015 Inc. to Infinity Ward in 2002. Both former employees have updated their LinkedIn profiles to confirm that April 2010 marks the end of their tenures at the studio.

Former lead animator Mark Grigsby may be familiar to Call of Duty fans as the inspiration for and voice actor of Staff Sergeant Griggs from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. He's also the guy who ably rapped over the end credits of that game.

The departure of Grigsby and Messerly leaves Infinity Ward at least 13 employees weaker since March 1. That number includes high level staffers like fired studio founders Jason West and Vince Zampella, plus a quickly growing list of team leads and veteran developers.

According to sources close to the studio, morale at Infinity Ward is unsurprisingly low due to a worrying lack of leadership.

So how long before Activision decides to move what's left of the IW team to Treyarch, and then making Treyarch milk out the CoD/MW series dry (further) as they did with Neversoft and TonyHawk/GuitarHero?

They're most likely already working on that now.
