The two statements are not at all the same thing. The first states practical reason why you don't want to do something (avoid social ostracizing) the second statement is making a declaration on what is wrong or right to do or wear based on gender.

When people say that wearing tight pants is gay, they aren't offering you advice on why you shouldn't wear those pants, they are saying that wearing those pants is wrong because you are a man. Let's ignore the fact that i am not even mentioning the unconscious link between gay and unmanly.

In any case, you could make the argument that someone who says that:

"Those pants look feminine" is trying to tell you that you shouldn't wear those pants because people might think you're effeminate, or it could be taken to be a value judgement by the person making the statement. However saying:

"Men should not wear those pants" is a clearer example of what i mean. The difference between relying on uncritical rhetoric and using reasonable arguments.

I am aware the statements are not the same thing, they are cause and effect, one plays into the other. It doesn't have to be a gay thing, "gay" is just a generic term these days to express disgust at a certain situation fair or not. I could easily take the term away and use a word like "pathetic" or "lame" or "retarded" to describe the situation the same way. I know it probably seemed like the conversation probably bordered on homophobia, but hey, Ansem was talking and it seemed natural.

She had neoliberal ideas and many people associate her with neoliberalism. She is mostly known for being a simple conservative though. Her economics are neoliberal though, if that's what you mean.
