For the same reason people read movie and book (and etc) reviews after watching/reading/etc.

EDIT: As for videogame reviews being little more than advertisement: Well a good review is going to be good advertisement no matter how you cut! But it has more to do with the passion of the writer. IGN circulates its writers with little care and most, if not all of them, lack expertise in whatever genre they happen to be writing about. Who knows if they are passionate? Some are, and it might show, but who are they!? Rotten Tomatoes tells you when you are reading Ebert, metacritic says "IGN".

well, i think it depends on the type of write-up that's being given, to be honest. some people basically just give you a summary of the game and say they're excited about it.

Yeah, that is certainly true for a lot of videogame publications. A review which focuses on being a summary lacks content. I think they get from being 50% news, 50% critical(and a 100% bribes, amirite dudes?).

I'm being simple-minded? Yes, reviewing/criticizing is the same thing in the context of some legitimate form of review. But game reviewers are not criticizing games, they're pleasing advertisers.

if some asshole writing for game informer reviews games, people are going to think that man is a critic with a valid opinion, not someone paid to give them a 1000 word video game pitch. i don't know how much more plain that can be made.

I think most people realize they're being sold a bill of goods, they just don't care because they enjoy the games that get good reviews and have no impetus for finding out themselves whether they enjoy the ones that get bad reviews.
