I recently bought a converter for my PS2 controller and everything works fine according to my gamepad settings. However one of my friends says I need to install drivers, is there any truth to this?

I bought a USB converter for my PS2 controller so I could use it on my PC. It's working fine but my friend keeps insisting I install the drivers for it or something like that.
Your friend doesn't know what he is talking about. You do not need to install drivers for a PS2 controller on any operating system newer than Windows XP SP2
If it works, your system is using a driver for it. It could just be a basic driver. My Super Joy Box works fine just plugging it in, but if I install the current driver, it adds force feedback and pressure sensitive buttons to the list, as well as allowing me to specify what type of controller is installed, say if I wanted to use a dance pad for StepMania. It also lets you remap the buttons and turn on turbo buttons. If you don't want any of that, the basic driver in Windows is just fine.
Just as said above, the driver is more for the extra options such as force feedback, re-mapping buttons, analog/digital, etc...
Depending on what you're using it for, you may or may not need the drivers. If it's working fine for you, then no need to install them.
only thing you're probably missing is rumble support.
If you have it you're good to go
