Has anyone figured out what the inn is for yet? Does it look like potential future housing, or is it just another shop?

They have not implemented anything with it yet. I believe the inn master at the table in the Drowning Wench gives some generic speech about the inn. I'll get the exact quote for you on Thursday.
The same could also be said about this if the game isn't delayed. A risky if, but still. I think most people are just excited they are still pushing for a 2010 release at the moment. Everyone would be a little less excited if they announced 3 months ago that they had to push it back to 2011.I know that when this game gets delayed 6 months down the line into 2011 people are gonna be quoting this horseshit like its the goddamn bible.
SE's newsletters have always been 2-3 weeks late and none of the info has really been accurate (see the BETA sign up newsletter regarding re-registering).
Also until the game is in late beta and SE drops an official release date don't take anything anybody says anywhere about the game's release as final. I know that when this game gets delayed 6 months down the line into 2011 people are gonna be quoting this horseshit like its the goddamn bible.
Yeah, there's absolutely no way SE can be completely sure about 2010 release. They can only throw predictions based on XI but as we've seen shit doesn't always work as predicted.

lulFamitsu has an interview with team Final Fantasy XIV this week. Here's a summary of the bullet points that were listed at Game Jouhou:
- The Beta version will see some system changes that will make it so that you can more easily string together your attacks.
- The alpha test had bad tempo with insufficient explanations. They've made some revisions to the beta, resulting in a completely different system.
- It will be easier to save up Gil.
- You remember that amazing comparison shot showing how much better the beta looks compared to the alpha? It seems that the beta uses a different technique for its shadows. The alpha version used something called "Project Shadows" while the beta version uses "Depth Buffer Shadows."
- The city of Limsa Lominsa will have two levels.
- There will be a robust log filter in place. This is something that wasn't finished in time for the alpha.
- They're readying something large scale for your home, which functions like FFXI's Mog House.
- They'll soon be adding alpha testers as part of the new "alpha 2" phase. They've already selected the participants via drawing!
- As you play the game, you'll be able to freely change the god that you select during character making.
- Vehicles for FFXIV include Chocobo, horse driven carriage, boat, and air ship.
- You'll be able to select different colors for your equipment.
Maybe the xp system v.2 they were talking about testing? Might be interesting."The alpha test had bad tempo with insufficient explanations. They've made some revisions to the beta, resulting in a completely different system."
Interest piqued
Probably taken care of either a) the lag issue that slows down battle or b) fixed the the BR system in some way yeah."The Beta version will see some system changes that will make it so that you can more easily string together your attacks."
Battle regimens or what?
Gonna be an interesting interview this week for sure if this is in anyway accurate info.

The housing thing makes me happy.
But.. this is the first time we'll see an horse in a FF? Chocobo rival arrives. XD
Horse drawn carriage
i lold
The housing and transport part puts a big smile on my face. I hope this will all be true.
And I think that horse carriage will actually be chocobo carriage. Chocobo's have always been the horses of FF. I doubt they'll change that.
I hope it'll be something totally awesome like camel or dhalmel and not just a normal boring Horse.
Zebras would do though.
EDIT: If you start in Ul'Dah it better be camel.
I understand things can change, just nice, as others said, that they are still pushing for a 2010 release. I also am happy to see they're ready for alpha2.
Horse drawn carriage? Trying to understand this one lmao, maybe like(excuse the comparison) flight plans in wow? Pick where to go and walk away for a bit? no idea.
So, battle tempo or leveling tempo? IMO it sounds more like battle tempo because I didn't find the leveling tempo to be bad at all, but almost too fast.
Not to mention there was this bad publicity regarding the battle speed, so that's why they'd say something like this.
Could be just fixing lag or something like that tho.
Yay mog house decorating!!!
Kirin Drawn carriage or bust.
LNC gameplay 7 mins
Spoiler: show

Fun using MAR + ARC skills on LNC, even at level 10

Horse drawn carriages sound lame
