Has someone mentioned why TP abilities take 500 more than listed in the tooltip?

    Bug or feature?

Pretty sure its intended since it means you can only use two TP moves in a row, 3 if your lucky enough to get 1000 TP back from two abilities. Not sure if you get a better outcome if you wait til 1500 TP or not.

It's really no different here. You get cure abilities on more classes now sure, but don't forget that you can't use everything you've learned. The entire game is like blue mage. You have a certain amount of ability slots/points, and when you use them up you lose the rest of your unallocated arsenal.

It'll just end up being like /whm. Use it if you're solo, or if you need it. Otherwise, you'll just be gimping your role by slotting these abilities.

Not saying its a bad design, because I like it. It's just not as different as you guys are making it out to be. It's a different end to the same means.
Its really not the same as /whm. Subbing whm in FFXI gave you access to very subpar cures and if you were a melee class you either had to use MP gear or run out of MP very quickly.

Not only that, but /whm affected your stats and stopped you from using other subs for thier useful abilities.

With FFXIV's system, even if they keep the 20 ability slots limitation, equipping 1-2 "healing" abilities isn't going to gimp your main class. Many of them don't use MP either, so you don't have to equip MP gear, nor does it stop you from using 5-6 skills or abilities from other classes that are more useful to your main role.

Personally I think that one of the new classes will be a healer. I can't see the self heals being enough for the really hard encounters at endgame, but I can see people using self heals during parties and having the option of the "healer" being another DD class.

You don't know that, there's only access to level 20. And even so, you can easily fill your bar with purely offense/buffs even at this point in time. And with the various cooldown timers, it's not even a stretch to say you could get 20 genuinely useful skills.

    So we are not allowed to post anymore links to videos anymore, but are we allowed to share links through PMs with friends at least or people who are interested? I doubt SE can take down this video seeing as its hosted in a country that has no laws so was just curious. If so I got a link to about 2 hours of game play from 04-09-2010. But if Sonomaa says no then just google it >.>;

Seems like a feature. Some abilities have a minimum TP cost, but will expend more TP if it is available (like up to 500 more, in some cases, or even double that? like with puncture). I'm assuming the additional TP improves the ability or its effect or something.

Other TP moves will use only a fixed amount, like Levinbolt will always only take 1000.

Its definitely different from being /whm. With subjobs other than the ability to cure, there was the innate disadvantage in stats, meaning to say without even considering the advantage of a cure spell, you'd have to trade something off already.

Assuming 1 of your 20 slots is already empty, you're not necessarily losing anything to begin with to put a Cure in, but the opportunity cost is there.

I highly doubt there'll ever be a dedicated healing class after Conjurer. But I do foresee the Conjurer's ability list being particularly long and covering many different areas of skill types, one of which consists of different kinds of healing stuff..

As for the 20 slot limitation, I'm quite certain it will increase with level or something of that sort. We gotta remember we're just scratching the surface of the system.

Yeah it's a somewhat old video and I have browsed through this thread and found links to the same website or at least an affiliate of it so it's no matter. It's the old video with Pooky in it. Doesn't show as much as these other videos but it's one I haven't seen. Well I like the direction this game is going in.

But they really have to do something to where you don't have to be a cookie cutter and will still do alright in a group environment. IE the Paths you can tank in WoW, the different job setups you can have in FFXI (granted there's no official path type traits you can take). A lot of MMOs have paths that become useless and pointless, but only because it's more efficient to take the path that downs an enemy faster.

I wouldn't mind a game in which makes you change abilities/paths on the fly which LOOKS like FF 14 has promise to accomplish! Change weapons, change jobs on the fly; but can you also switch around your abilities on the fly? Granted it should work like merit points and only be allowed in town/moghouse. That way your party can get together, plan a strategy and use it.

And in doing so I only HOPE, yeah I capitalized that, so cool... that they make every single ability useful depending on where you are at in the game. A lot of the FPS, facerolling lazy variety of people that just want to mash one powerful move won't flock to this game if you do this. I would love you forever and would spend max money a month on this game whether through more characters or a friends list plus type thing like I do on FFXI.

I need to get off these forums.... this shit drives me crazy just like the movie Shutter Island does...

If you need 20 slots filled with "useful" skills (i.e skills you simply cannot be without in every single fight) then I'd say your doing it wrong. Unless mobs become 20 times harder then there's no way you would even use 20 different abilities in a single fight, even taking into account situational abilities.

On top of that, many skills do pretty much exactly the same thing. Red Lotus Blade and Trunksplitter are the same thing when equipped on a PUG, Brandish and Circle Blade are also identical for all intents and purposes. Even if you needed a few different skills for specific mobs it takes 10 seconds to swap 1-2 skills over, you can literally do it on the fly by dropping into passive mode.

The FFXIV system simply doesn't have the disadvantages that the subjob system did in FFXI so comparing them is like comparing apples to oranges.

I can definately see having all 20 skill slots filled with a mix of abilities and weapon skills being very usefull. I'm sure that the intensive fights that can drag on for a good while such as party versus enemy party and fights against notorious monsters. All of these abilities and weapon skills will surely be usefull at some point in the fight. We'll probably be really decked out with alot of usefull weapon skills, some that let you deliver a powerful blow after the enemy evades your attack or one that lets you *do something after meeting certain condition* for example. About being able to quickly drop into passive mode and switch things up, i believe that Square Enix will place some restrictions on this in the future. Something like not being able to go into active mode for 5 minutes after setting an ability or so forth.

i see the possibility of there being "BCs" where going into passive mode is not an option.. meaning to say you have to strategize everything before the battle.

    would make for interesting fights

Wouldn't be so quick to conclude that 20 abilities = doing it wrong...

Normal Stuff: Slash, Guard, Red Lotus II, Circle Slash
Debuffs: Skewer, Concussive Blow, Howling Slash/Skull Sunder/Moon Rise
    Heals: Speed Surge, Chakra, Bloodbath
    Counters: Haymaker, Phalanx, Fracture
    Def. Buffs: Featherfoot, Foresight
    Off. Buffs: Ferocity, Raging Strike
Tanking: Rousing Provoke, Mocking Provoke, Defender

My current 20 slots and I use all consistently aside from Circle Slash.

Your using 3 self healing abilities. The whole point of the debate there was that you would have room to include at least 1 self heal.

Are people reading all the posts or just reading one post and taking it out of context?

I'm saying that the system is a great thing, and that having every class with at least 1 self heal skill slotted is nothing like being /whm in FFXI. Thats it.

I read everything, and I agree that slotting in 1 or 2 heals/defensive abilities won't be as drastic a loss as /whm. However, it is just that we have like 200+ ranks worth of abilities to show up still. I can easily see the possibility of some of those abilities taking preference over a self heal so its just a little too much to count it out completely. Was just trying to show that it was easy to fill up the 20 slots with useful abilities even when we only have access to 20 ranks worth.

If my OP seemed directed at you, I apologize. Looking at it now, it definitely reads like it was an out of context reply. Didn't mean for it to seem that way.

I would like to say the above statement makes a good point. At the moment it seems Conjurer is the closest we have to a main healing class. However, Conjurer has to rely on MP in order to cure, which could become a struggle on their part if they have to do the job all by themselves. Having other damage dealers equip one or more self healing skills would greatly help, and overall I think it would help to support optimal performance more so than having everyone except for one main healer focus only on damage output.

You can't say their won't be main healers because you have no idea what will be most effective in another 30 levels or in massive group play. I have a hard time believing that hindering ~10 DD with curative skills/spells will be more effective than one individual focusing on the healing role. Not only are all those DD losing potential buffs/damage dealing moves, but they also take time that they could be using for DPS. We also already know that gear plays a major role in the effectiveness of nukes. I assume that gear plays that same role on cures, and until someone posts their findings of a pure curing conjurer you really can't say for sure how inefficient it is.

Info leaked from the latest Famitsu

    * The beta version will see some system changes that will make it so that you can more easily string together your attacks.
    * The alpha test had bad tempo with insufficient explanations. They've made some revisions to the beta, resulting in a completely different system.
    * It will be easier to save up gil.
    * Beta appears to use a different technique for its shadows. The alpha version used something called "Project Shadows" while the beta version uses "Depth Buffer Shadows."
    * The city of Limsa Lominsa will have two levels.
    * There will be a robust log filter in place. This is something that wasn't finished in time for the alpha.
    * They're readying something large scale for your home, which functions like FFXI's Mog House.
    * They'll soon be adding alpha testers as part of the new "alpha 2" phase. They've already selected the participants via drawing!
    * As you play the game you'll be able to freely change the god that you select during character making.
    * Vehicles for FFXIV include chocobo, horse driven carriage, boat, and airship.
    * You'll be able to select different colors for your equipment.
edit:- Nevermind didn't see it posted 2 pages back.

I hear ya. I've been checking every fansite today, waiting for it or at least a confirmation. But I have yet to see anything.
