I agree about the no sneak/invis aspect. I wish they didn't exist.
However, I do like how they deal with too weak mobs (no aggro) vs. WoW where things will always chase you.
Even if combat moves at a snail's pace, when you're juggling between fighting multiple targets at once, combat inevitably speeds up. Combat was slow in FFXI not simply because of the TP system, but also because you, for the sweeping majority of the game, fought against a single target.
One example I can remember that felt pretty fast-paced was doing the Airship mammet fight (the true way - not sleeping and nuking). Another example is Divine Might (again, the true way, not Ga-ing everything down).
Go figure that fights like those were among my favorite in the game. Divine Might still represents my personal pinnacle of FFXI - at least when it wasn't cheaply exploited by black mages.
People used to have someone mount and train off trash mobs in Zul'Gurub before they implemented zone/raid-wide aggro, but that was fixed a very long time ago and I can't think of any encounters since where my raids have done that. You can't even mount in most instances. People avoid aggroing trash packs whenever they can, but you have to wade through most of them -- and then there was Hyjal, where you had to sit through 40 minutes of fucking mass trash waves for the boss to spawn and do it all over again when you wipe. Eurrggh.
I'd like to keep sneak/invis just for soloing purposes, but if they actually make clearing trash mobs not such an insignificant, monotonous, long, pointless waste of time, I'd be okay with it. It'd be really nice if it would be challenging or rewarding in some capacity so I couldn't literally sleep through it. They'll definitely get rid of it if more of endgame takes place in instances, where encounters are less "massively overleveled mob hidden in the back of some obscure zone where the main goal is getting the tag followed by an incredibly long tank-and-spank and server shit-talking" and more about clearing the whole of the instance.
Can you imagine how much of a pain FFXI would be without sneak and invis? I don't want to kill a billion things on the way to my real goal, especially in endgame. There's just too many areas where having no sneak/invis would be impractical. Imagine sky, jormy, tiamat, fafnir, turtle, ToAU kings, various objectives through zones like Den of Rancor, etc. without sneak/invis. Granted, some can be trained like sky and fafnir, and some can be MGS'd like Tiamat, but still...
I hope sneak/invis stays. Especially considering the "trash" mobs on the way to most endgame events, or anywhere else, can kill a solo person on their way to meet their LS. Especially if they have to keep running into them the entire way there. They're not weak, trivial creatures.
Just make it worth killing the things the game wants to throw in your way and it's all good, right? If I'm killing crabs, those things should be dropping bits of shells for crafting, food for crafting, and hell, maybe an item or two after I've killed 30 for the day.
@And just about every boss you listed up there has to be claimed over some other group vying for the same thing, which forces an unnecessary amount of speed to get somewhere in a hurry. Of course you needed sneak/inviz when you had to catch up to the mob that 3 other LSes just realized popped.
WoW had that same feeling when world spawns were actually important, but even then, those weren't on daily pops, forcing you to drop everything and run, run, RUN!!!
I still don't think that even if they made crabs drop land crab meat and HQ shells, it'd make anyone feel more happy about having to kill them all on the way to their event.
"Sorry guys, I'm late to Jormy, I had to kill 10 buffalos, some snolls, a few demons, and a couple tigers."
(Pretend Jormy was worth doing, and pretend the guy was a BRD and had to kill them all solo)
I'll pretend Jormy was worth doing, but you pretend your LS got its own Jormy (still worth killing) so it didn't have to bot and speed run through the zone to get there. Also pretend the stuff along the way either had to be killed or had to skillfully be avoided (sneak/inviz at its core isn't skillful, yet certain re-applications sure were), and had chances to drop decent stuff (think Dynamis trash dropping useful things).
Would you still be in such a rush?
I really loved what sneak/invis added to the game. I liked running around dangerous places solo while managing those buffs. It was like a mini-game each zone had that added a sense of danger. Most of the time we all got around just fine, but oh shit right when you dropped to recast that mob turned around and saw you, ect.
It was only lame when you had to manage an entire alliance's sneak/invis like old-school RotZ Ifrit Cauldron's mission to get to the Opo-Opo headstone. That was bullshit because once someone recast their buffs someone else would need to stop for theirs.
I'll be happy with the whole sneak/invisible system if they have the sneak/invisible items (oils/powders) not expensive in any way. The biggest pain with the current system is people being too cheap to take care of themselves... Also, getting so used to being able to sneak around and then being introduced to zones like Promyvion, Al'Tieu, and other areas full of true-sight/sound crap and all-of-a-sudden you can't get anywhere without a group/sleeps/logouts/petcheats/etc.
All in all, I should be able to travel anywhere (within reason) without a party to back me up. Oh yeah, and sound-based mobs shouldn't be able to hear you when you're not moving or doing anything. I had always wondered why I couldn't just stand still and hold my breath when a crab got too close.
If they redo the entire game to be like that, maybe not.
But if the game is anything like what we're used to from SE, then I still want my sneak/invis.
So, it depends on if they completely overhaul the game world to be designed to not need sneak/invis.
I also prefer that mobs don't stop chasing you. You aggroed it, you deal with it. You can't just run 40-100 yards away and all is forgiven. It's way too easy to tease mobs that way, and lure them away for whatever purpose without consequence since you know they'll just turn around the moment you step past the magic distance. It also makes MGSing trivial. You can blunder your way through an area as long as you can move fast enough. The important difference with FFXI training being that in FFXI, in the end, they all catch up with you unless you can reach the zone line. So it's also about endurance than just speed and running a few yards.
In FFXI, mobs occasionally forgot about you (usually when you least wanted them to) which is ok. But it shouldn't be a given that you can just get a mob's attention, run a little bit and you're good.
Some of you fgts are making it extremely difficult to attempt to keep up with this thread. Post less bullshit please, who I'm referring to should be obvious.
Without zones, you'll either have to have despawning mobs, or NPC guards stationed at certain areas, otherwise there's nothing to stop people from just running mobs right into town.
There are a rare handful of newer generation games that have constantly chasing mobs, and all of them have outpost guards or town guards, presumably for that very reason, MPK factors aside.
@Celeras: nothing new has been posted, because nothing new has been discovered. When there's a random discussion thread, I'll post there, but until then...
Spoiler: show
Someone asked about crafting leves (blacksmithing) and what you get for completing them, gil, crystals and synthing materials, no XP and no weapons at least from the ones that were done.
Basically the leve gives you a crafting order & gives you temporary items to fulfill it, depending on how well you make the item and how much stamina (I forget what its called) you use you will get more gil for the completed order.
You no longer need to specify a crystal to use, you enter the items and the correct crystal will be automatically selected, obviously you can play around with different combinations and will sometimes get the error you do not have the required crystal or you are not high enough level to perform this synth.
If all the crafting leves work like this though I can see it being abused with players powerleveling a craft, not to mention RMT will have a field day sitting and crafting non stop.
The leves remind me of the Crafting quests from Aion.
Completely overhaul the game world we know all of jack and shit about so far? Man, its a new game, people really need to stop assuming so much is going to be the same as 11.
I see alot of people whining about making sure group play is important in 14, but then when someone says Sneak/Invis is garbage and weakens the game, they freak out. Basically, I guess most of you want another game where you only group to sit somewhere killing the same shit for hours, then when its time to do missions, sneak/invis through all your cs and get a group only when definitely required. Even on missions, the group is going to sneak/invis through everything til they get to the bcnm, pop spot, or whatever.
Well, when you cant beat'em join'em. I hope action movies start having the main characters sneak/invis through all the peons of the film, that way the movie can be a lot shorter. You'll have so much more time for activities.
Bottom line is sneak/invis shows how little SE thought out what they were doing in ffxi. Anyone remember some shit they put out about HNM being in "scary zones" that players would have to fight through to get to their goals?
The consistent mentioning of "waste of time mobs" is the most annoying shit ever. I hope FF15 has a spot you can sit and kill mobs constantly for hours, then you just run into an area and sneak/invis past the "waste of time" mobs and get to the boss and next cs quicker.
I mean, the last thing I want to do when playing a video game with people is "waste my time". My ego is based on video game pixels, I need to procure them as quickly as possible so I can sit in town and afk in my town gear.
^Sneak and Invisable weren't thought out it was patched into the game after it went live in Japan.
I personally would rather they give us a game without sneak and invisable, but they need to balance the monsters so its not a complete drag to work your way through an area.
I think Aetherite will provide us a partial sneak option also.
