If XIV is designed for a gamepad, SE is limiting themselves hugely in the overall marketplace. I do not care if its "easy to control" via a game controller and a lot of players that may come from wow/aion/lotro/aoc/warhammer will not care either.
I will be blunt here... its not a logistical impossibility to make it controller friendly and mouse/kb friendly. The current system is actually worse than XI's controls. We do not necessarily need to be able to click to cast, but we definitely need to see better camera and movement controls.
In the end a game such as XIV demands accessibility. It brings that to those of us who played XI for years and years. We are used to screwed up controls, slow combat and intricate/time consuming crafting. The rest of the world is used to intuitive controls, faster paced combat and shitty worthless set it and forget it crafting.
Se has high hopes for this game. It looks wonderful, it feels familiar to those of us who were a fan of XI, but as it stands it does not deliver what it needs to in order to appeal to the masses.
Dull? lol i dont think this is the word for it. I would say stupid but it was interesting. It was annoying that he just up and ran away... FAR FAR away. He was extremely easy as were his pets. If there had been a little RP in there it may have been more interesting but considering you can repeat the level several times it would get old fast.
Right now the issue with the leve system is that there really is no rhyme or reason to the star system. It suggests party size but a level 9/rank 8 can easily do most 3 star's at Cedarpoint.
It just would be nice to see some actual changes to systems based on feedback. We have been stuck in this perpetual server stability thing since the beginning with very little (if any) changes to the meta game systems.
.......
FFXIV isn't optimised for the gamepad, its just playable with a gamepad.
You can use whatever control device you like. The gamepad is the only customisable device atm because its alpha.
Who cares which one is better. Everyone will be able to pick the one they like, so stop bitching about it already!
/rant off
They have said many times now that you wont see any changes to the game systems until beta stage 2, months from now.
That leve with the imp isn't a NM, its just a named mob.
The changes that will be made aren't going to be made in phase 1, we've all known that for a long time.
While yes 1-3 star quests can be easily done with a single person 3 levels under the recommended level, I urge you to bump it up to a 4 star. Tried to duo one at Cedarwood with a GLD and ARC. x2 Stray Dodo's pretty much curb stomped us. We we're also 1 level below the recommended level.
There's 1-2 "flee" quests in each camp (Camp Bearded Rock, Cedarwood, Camp Bloodshore) They are the exact same quest with different mobs. It is DULL. Not interesting. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving alpha and I wasn't expecting anything crazy special. I'm just stating that it was a dull quest.
I also found a mildly amusing bug today. Level 13 Rank 16 Archer near Bloodshore. Arrow Helix hits me instead of the mob.
Arrow Helix Bug?
Spoiler: show
Just curious where did you get this info? I thought I have read every interview with the devs, if I have missed one with that kind of info, I would really like to check it out. All of the interviews I recall where asked about NMs and "HNMs" they always just dodged the question, and started talking about end game content.
I dunno if I'm the only one, but maybe after an hour of holding a controller, even with little lap rests here and there, my ring and pinky fingers start to go numb. While I wouldn't say holding a controller is uncomfortable for me, the whole "funky C with my thumb and index, rest curled against the grips" seems to be causing this after a while. I've never really hit this level of discomfort ever while using a keyboard during marathon sessions. I know my hands aren't huge, but I know they aren't small, either.
In general, yes, I'm for complete customization of controls. I'm just sick of other games not going far enough, as eventually you'll need the mouse, which means I then have to sit a certain way unless I want my shoulder to fall asleep while chilling kicked back in my chair with my wireless keyboard in my lap while my feet are propped up on my bed.
So, yeah... I find WASD kinda cumbersome since somewhat recreates the curled/numb finger thing I get with controllers since, yes, it is your movement. The slight offset of the W key makes laying my hand more flat, like on the numpad, uncomfortable since my middle finger needs to curve left some, and then my pinky's curling in so I'm not hitting tab/caps. Whereas on the numpad I can just comfortably cradle it against +/enter without ever pushing either. Add to that the back and forth on WASD while going for the number row for macros alongside dramatic wrist shifts to get some ctrl+alt action and it's like... blah.
tl;dr
WASD = Mantis Typing = Hand Crampy
Numpad = Open Palm = Do This All Day~
People had been reporting getting HQ results when making crafting mats, but until today I hadn't seen one myself.

xxx creates 6 some copper nuggets +1.
That kind of weird phrasing.
Six some? Like, it doesn't know how many, but somewhere around 6?
I'm praying that either world spawn NMs are not in XIV, or if they are, do not have highly desired drops like they do in XI. Otherwise, SE might as well put up a sign inviting people to botfest 2.0.
Ah, I forgot to respond :3 That armor info is encouraging to hear.
Hopefully that wiggle room is a result of adopting a policy of multiple equally itemized options, meaning it'll stick around after the game gets into the swing of things. Thank you both for answering
Hhhnnn. Are we talking about this?
http://ffxiv.zam.com/story.html?story=19459Although not confirmed, Tanaka says there is the distinct possibility Notorious Monsters will make it into the game, bringing with them rare item drops. High Notorious Monsters, however, are planned to be included in the Guildleve system.
It doesn't outright say they'd be world-spawn, but it does imply it depending on how you want to read that "however"
I'd be more worried about it too, if they hadn't said this:
http://www.ffxivcore.com/topic/1598-...omichi-tanaka/Q11: Will mobs actually drop armors/weapons like most MMOs or is FFXIV going to be like FFXI where you can only obtain these in Auction House or Crafting, or Raids?
A: The complete details of this are still undecided.
As in FFXI and other MMORPGS, some monsters will drop armor and weapons. However, items that drop in this manner are always a target for RMT exploitation. So to avoid any kind of player exclusion, most instances of these drops will yield items which cannot be passed between players.
To put it broadly, there will be a number of ways available to obtain a number of different items.
so was today's test again in improvement over the previous ?
really hope we see the next phase announced soon
Town is still a lagfest, 15fps usually. Same with The crystal camps.
Shop/Guildleve menus are lagged to hell. 30 secs frozen in time just trying to sell or buy things. Same with Synth menu and dropping items from inventory. Chat spam feels like it's causing lag also.
Everywhere else is capped fps. Battle is smooth as ever. Server still feels fragile to me but what do I know about servers.
