FFXIV Random Speculation/Question thread II: Let's Speculate the Speculations

Thing people need to understand is that there are certain aspect of the game SE won't consider changing.

They have a vision and have said we want your input on this feature, not can you give us idea's because we don't have a clue.

I am willing to bet the speed of the combat won't change much from now till release except for lag issues, people will either have to get used to it or go play something else.

In fact I am dubious if SE will do much at all with the suggestions they've received.

Theres a difference between discussion and someone saying 'shit sucks' - I thought that was common sense? Hardly removes the huge group of people who just spam 'HURRRRRRRRRR it's Alpha guys' that think that the game will be drastically different in every aspect from what it is now.

The amount of people here who are so blissfully unaware of how dumb they sound and argue to the point where they actually think they are correct truly baffles me (yes, you are one of them). People spam the reminder that the game is in an alpha version because the weight that statement holds just doesn't seem to sink in. You give people videos and you get "Oh, the combat is slow." No shit, the game is running on a single server. It's followed up by, "Well the textures kind of suck and the animations aren't very smooth." No shit, the game has yet to be polished. The group shouting that the game is in an alpha version are very much in the right here - people don't seem to get that idea through their head at all and it rightfully needs to be reinforced.

On the other hand, people who think the game's concept is going to change drastically are lost at sea without a paddle.

Most of the non-fan market is barely aware this game exist. Also complaints about combat in alpha travel far in this "Hit it or Forget it" mentality among mmo players. Not everyone will be considerate of "this is alpha" logic, but then again not many people care about this game yet outside of the base.

I wasn't trying to 'insult' the game. I think it's slow. Maybe the author of the video was 'slow' on purpose to illustrate the various skills/etc. since he is posting this for us to view.

Your op is valid, I can see why someone would say its slow, its not fast combat, like guild wars etc, but the thing here, is i dont think its meant to be, like it or not, they werent planning on implementing a heavy action mmo. Having played it to a certain level, i actually find the battle to be entertaining, even at an early phase, but some may not.
Basically the system probably isnt for you if you want fast twitch skill spam type play. I dont always mind that type of play, but its likely not what your gonna get here.
Not saying its fast or its gonna get much faster, still its still fairly entertaining when your actually doing it it past level 7 or 8 and im assuming the rank level will go much higher than 20 by the time the game is out

Nah, I don't mind it that much. I was just making an observation.

I've only played* Aion and FFXI. Of course Aion is more fast-paced, but it's a pvp MMO. So I get the context to the slow pacing (relative). It's understandable.

Having played myself, the actual speed of the fight has a lot to do with the server. I'm not annoyed, butthurt or the like. The combat isn't WoW fast, nor is it intended to be. You should already understand that though, unless you only have a third of a brain. From there, the "normal pace" is very much slowed by server stability, so I can only assume that you're complaining about that.

It's faster than the videos show, but not amazingly fast. Whatever your stance, it's stupid to call the battle speed "slow" at this point.

I've been away from FFXI for awhile now and haven't kept up with XIV info.
Have they released any info on when Beta Testers are going in?

Eh, from what I experienced, the combat is indeed pretty slow. I don't think it's that stupid to say that at this point.

I dunno though. I didn't find it boring by any means, but not that exciting either. I wouldn't expect much more at level <10 in any game though, so it's all good. It's quadruple times more exciting than XI's first ten levels, that much I can assure you >_>.

I also found out it's still more interesting to play it yourself than watch it on the video, obviously.

Will be interesting to see what the "non-XI" testers think once the devs open it up a bit more. I'm of course biased being an ex-XI player.

One question tho of something that I noticed; do all the weapons have default "attack speed" listed as 1, or do they vary currently?

If your previous post was aimed at me, my feelings are not hurt, nor am I "reading too deeply". I was just calling a troll comment for what it was. If your previous post had included the part I bolded above there wouldn't have been a problem with it, it would have been a legitimate complaint. Just saying "combat looks slow" is pointless, you need to qualify the statement with some reasons.

I am all for criticisms of a game, it generates discussion and it gives me something to read while at work (like right now), and it can lead to good ideas that can be suggested to the devs. Troll posts however, don't really add anything and just serve to shit up a thread (yes I know I am contributing to that).

As for the post earlier by Cairthenn I think there are 2 distinct groups that are responsible for the posts/behaviour you are noticing. The first group is unfamiliar with what an Alpha phase entails because they are fairly uncommon and with no frame of reference they compare it too the only similar thing they know, which is Beta tests. This leads to complaints about things like graphics/animations being incomplete because they are used to seeing fairly polished games with only minor touches being required.

The second group is also unfamiliar with Alpha and most likely game development in general. They view alpha as the very beginning of development in which key components of the game are able to be changed and modified based on their requests. They don't understand that while some things are able to be addressed key aspects of the game are already set and changing them would be changing the very core of the game and are just not possible.

*note* I understand that there are people that are in neither group, and these people know exactly what an alpha entails but that those aren't the people I am talking about.
