rdm tells your situation you're wrong
I actually agree 100% that rdm is better at it too but that's not what i'm debating!
Edit: if a whm/nin wanted advice on his melee gear would you not help him at all because a mnk can do way better damage?
"There were no rdm tanks online" is a sound enough reason tbh
Haha you sure showed me that haut has 0 use by trying to argue something else!! Great argument!!
Are you just stalling for time waiting for Thorny to step in or something? Please explain how I'm wrong about haut not having 0 use for pld.
Fuck you guys and your rdm only. Plds unite!
As for the above poster: koenig and darksteel will be about equal damage reduction, with koenig adding more hp.
And to thorny, only moves that are set damage favor pdt over defense (like 1000 needles), other crit based moves still gain good reduction from def.
Either way, the def ring adds Twice the pdt than patronus ring on both his jobs, so it is silly to argue patronus is better.
You realize even if pld was the worst possible tank for everything in the game it would NOT effect if haut has a use for pld or not right? You are embarrassing yourself
Holy fuck at the past page or so.
Neo, unless I'm reading it wrong, your comparisons are all assuming 0 base PDT before ring, right? 'cos what base you start from will have an impact.
Ignoring Derock for being a butthurt idiot and being shown wrong in -every- thread he has ever posted in:
Even with considering base PDT before/after ring, it still wins. Base PDT wont effect the %PDT added by def, just the amount of damage that is filtered to that pdif equation. (i.e. you'll still reduce 5% of the damage you take, it'll just be 5% of whatever the PDT already took off). So yes, higher PDT does reduce the effects of %PDT from def, but for the patronus to beat the def ring, you would need about 50% PDT in your sets.
Hence why with PDT sets: Defending ring >> Jelly Ring >> Def Ring >> Patronus.
Exactly.
I posted relative differences of effects of Def with varying attack/def ratios and effects with/without PDT sets equiped, helping the people that asked questions. You posted insults and dickless comments to jack off to your own stupidity.
Go troll somewhere else, you're a virus here, no one is amused by you. You've shit up the last 2 pages with your crap, go away.
What are you babbling about? -PDT provides a static bonus. Take 1,000 Needles: if you go from -0% to -5% PDT you reduce the damage from 1000 to 950, thus negating 50 damage. If you go from -45% to -50% PDT you reduce the damage from 550 to 500, again negating 50 damage. It's static, not a % of what -PDT you already have. This is not like Haste or MAB.i.e. you'll still reduce 5% of the damage you take, it'll just be 5% of whatever the PDT already took off
Edit: it's not exactly that clear cut due to the way the formula calculates the actual %, but it's still static as far as I can see.
It depends on what variable you are comparing to. If you compare "-PDT" to "Absolute Damage Reduced" then yes, it is static since in your example above, 1% PDT will always reduce 10 damage (likewise if you compare "Haste" to "Delay Reduced by Haste" it is also static but this is not useful - neither is the comparison above).
However, if you compare "Absolute Damage Reduced (per point of PDT)" with "Absolute Damage Taken", you'll find it has an increasing curve (10/990 = 1.01% decrease in damage, 10/980 = 1.02% decrease in damage, etc). You can see using your example above that as you add more PDT, each point is reducing the damage by more (and the final point, 10/500 decreases damage by 2%).
A critical hit gives +1.0 pdif. If your sample mob has 1.5 pdif and crits then your defense gear is only going to effect 60% of your damage taken. Say you have 33% more defense:
1.5 pdif is effected by it
1.0 pdif from critical is not
.6 x .66 = .396
.4 x 1 = .4
total damage = .796
damage reduction = 20.4% damage reduced from 33% defense
If mob pdif is lower, then damage reduction is lower as well, in terms of percent.
Similar logic applies if monsters have pdif boosts on their weaponskills. While BLU can only show us so much, many of the nastier WS are either critical hit or ignore some amount of defense. To properly analyze PDT vs defense you'd need to consider mob crit rate as well as make a choice between damage over time and one shot capability.
I'm with patronus, I can count the times I've died to plain noncrit melee while tanking on one hand.
I'm with Defending
But still, yeah, it's those criticals that slip by for like 600 damage that can be the death of you.
I see what you're saying Thorny about the crits and one shots and would have to agree. Any place where you have a chance of being taken out in 1 bad move or double crit hit, pdt would be better. However any other time, def20 ring would provide him with more pdt on average, twice as more infact.
Then again, things may change when we can solo king behe at 99 and SE releases the new 20%pdt rings >.>.
