What if I look cuter on PLD/NIN rather than RDM/NIN?!

It's like saying [smoking, drinking, unprotected sex, etc.] is bad for you. Motherfuckers we know, you don't have to remind us every 2.8 milliseconds.

Which is why I prefer to just say that Atonement is the only justification for using paladin, and pray that people are capable of arriving at the only logical conclusion that follows that realization.

You need a brain to be an effective RDM tank. That's the main reason that most people will use PLD tanks exclusively from now until the end of time.

Eh, a stupid person playing PLD is just as likely to fail as a stupid person playing RDM. Both are perfectly adequate for almost any situation, because, as you should all know by now, this game isn't hard.

It comes down to preference. If someone has both RDM/NIN and PLD, and they are more comfortable / feel more safe on PLD, then they should go PLD. You wouldn't have a brand new RDM/NIN comes solo tank Tiamat when they've done it 50+ times on PLD. Yes, a perfect RDM/NIN v PLD/NIN the RDM/NIN would be better, but that's not always the case.

That said, SAM/NIN tank or bust, get out of here with all these non-damage tanks

I disagree on that. I'm fairly certain that quite a few complete retards that I've seen play PLD and tank things "successfully" (i.e. without dying, and actually keeping the mob's attention for more than 30% of the time) would be completely lost if they had to tank something on RDM. You need to juggle significantly more things on RDM if you want to tank effectively, whereas on PLD all you need to do to be passable is engage, rely on shield procs, cast Flash periodically, Cure yourself when necessary (remembering that retards won't have Cure swaps) and pop Sent/Rampart whenever you can.

I'm not actually sure I know anyone with sam leveled who wants to tank hnms /nin. Certainly no one in my linkshell at least. I'm 90% certain they didn't level it for that.
Then again only a few rdms I know (out of the millions of them around) are interested in tanking on rdm at all and leveled it because they wanted an enfeeb/support job to play, not a tank...

    (Excluding salvage for the sams)

As for myself, I don't tank on rdm, but it's not that I don't want to, it's that I'm not good enough, with not enough merits or gear for it yet.

Either way, not like anything is hard or serious enough that you need a rdm tank over a pld or nin or whatever else you happen to have online if there are no rdms with tank skills available. People really need to stop with the "LOL @ You for using the wrong tank":
    1) Readers here already know where rdm > other tanks. There's really no need to re-state the obvious over and over.
    2) There aren't any mobs hard or serious enough most linkshells fight where they're gonna struggle without a rdm tank.
    3) Laughing at peoples pld sets for instances they should be using a rdm is stupid. A good player will have all his bases covered. Whether or not another job is better at that situation, there will be times when you might need it, and preparing for those situations is what makes you a better player.

The main point is there will be times when you need to fight something where rdm will be > pld or nin, but when you wont have a tank-able rdm online. Those are the times when you need to concider the use of shit like haut, and ignoring them is dumb.

Saying "If it's a situation where you're using haut, you should be on rdm" is annoying, (even though it is true). Pld does "fine" and what if said player doesn't want to level rdm? Sure, it might not be the most "efficient" way of doing it, but they probably don't care. Does that make them a worse player than you? Yes, but I doubt they care if someone else kills a mob slightly faster than them (which doesn't actually give any benefits other than the epeen of saying "we're better than you". But hey, if you like making everything a competition then good for you.)

tl;dr: We all know that in places you would use haut a rdm would be a better tank, but that does not mean you should ignore that situation and laugh at it, because you wont always have ideal jobs online.
Besides, who actually cares if your non-DD tank is slightly more efficient, caps hate slightly earlier, and means you kill it a minute or so faster? It wont actually mean anything important. Basically: well done. You killed it 2 mins faster, so you can masturbate 2 mins earlier and troll BG for 2 mins longer befor you have lunch. Great.

What game are you playing? In FFXI, all anyone cares about is efficiency. Go to the auction house and tell me the price difference between an Ancient Torque and a Peacock Charm, then go tell me the price difference between an Adaman Hauberk and an Armada Hauberk- notice a trend? People spend absurd amounts of money(read: time) on improvements that make no practical difference in their ability to complete tasks, be it in terms of actual rate of success or simply the speed of the completion. If we can all sit around and go back and forth about how a white box is warranted over its less shiny counterpart, its a bit hypocritical to get irritated when people talk about a particular job being superior to another for X-task.

You're right. This community cares about efficiency, and being the best, and doingitright.

So why laugh at the aforementioned times where haut would be viable because "rdm is better hurrr"?

If you are a good player, you should appreciate that sometimes shit happens, and you should be prepared.
What if you don't have a rdm tank online but because of all the retarded lolhaut bullshit on here, all your plds only had atonement based gear and weren't prepared for anything that a rdm would be more efficient on? Now you need to kill a mob that can't be meleed and have fuck all to tank it on.

Alternatively, that guy over there who has lolHaut, and builds using it for when you are disengaged, and comes on here, and gets laughed at for owning a haut is now useful because as there is no rdm tank online (Only iddle slowII/haste/refresh rdms) and he can step up and take it's role.

All the lolHaut bullshit is just that: Bullshit. Unless you yourself have Rdm leveled you can not laugh at disengaged builds, if you do and completely ignore their worth then you suck.
Yes, a Rdm tank may be more efficient, but you wont always have one.

When someone posts a haut build who doesn't have rdm leveled, he is right to have gear for it. You're wrong for going lolHaut. Yeah, Rdm is better but he isn't a rdm.

If people took the approach that you're all taking to haut's use then everyone who's not a Sam or War should throw away all their DD gear because lol@Your Job, War or Sam is better. Drk only needs one build: SEBW. Drg doesn't need gear. Just needs to have angons. Etc etc.

I hate to make such an Alla-esque statement, but sometimes, people will do things in a less efficient manner than normal because they find it, y'know, fun. We're not robots, FFXI isn't a job. This may apply less to people on BG than other FFXI sites, but some people get a kick out of playing pld/pup/bst/whatever-less-than-efficient-job-you-care-to-name, and want to do their best at it.

Couple things: (and Im not just arguing for Pld just because I love it, I love tanking on any jobs and am lvling rdm to have fun tanking on that.)

Yes, on anything that you cant atonement, a Rdm will beat a NON RELIC Pld. If you have Aegis, or Excal, or both, a rdm wont do a better job. I have better survivability, almost as good hate management (better at times depending on what I can sub/cast), and better resources than a Rdm, but mostly due to Aegis.

Benefits of Rdm: Stoneskin, near 100 (or more than 100 depending on gear/buffs) Spell interupt, higher MP, more enmity spells, higher PDT sets, Fast cast.

Against a standard Pld, that is a huge overcast. But let's break it down a bit:

A Rdm can only idle in PDT or Magic Down, not both. As an Aegis Pld I can cap MDT (and pile on a shit ton more MDB). I can get 34%+ PDT, WITH that capped MDT for idling.

Spell Interupt: I can get a very respectable Spell Interupt build (which any good pld has in their ichi macro), 10% (relic pants), 8% (waist), 9% (earring), 8% (merits), 7% (neck), 10% (feet) = 52% total spell interupt, and that's even before counting shield blocks. Add a 40% (minimum) shield block rate, that that's 76% chance of getting shadows back up if you get hit (not even counting shadow mantle procs).

Stoneskin: Rdm gets Stoneskin, but Pld has a higher base HP. Stoneskin offers the benefit of not losing enmity when decreased. However add whm cureskin to the mix and the gap gets narrower.

Phalanx2: Not quite Phalanx1, but it isnt shit either.

Fast cast: Rdm clearly wins here. However with Nuevo Body, Homam Legs, Loq. Earring, and a solid Spell Interupt/Shield gear setup, it isnt -that- big of a deal. However I would still say this (combined with the 100% spell interupt and stoneskin) is one of the big areas Rdm prevails.

Enmity spells: A clear Rdm winner. However, depending on what you are fighting, the gap will be smaller. Cure swaps, flashes, alliance cures, and enmity JAs help close the gap. However any event where Rdm can just sit and comfortably spam enmity spells while keeping shadows, Rdm will provide better hate management. However this is again at the cost of survivability and oshi~ (survivability over a Relic pld, already stated that a rdm is more survivable than a normal pld).

As for Haut, it has it's uses: Again for a relic Pld. In the cases above, where a Relic Pld can cap MDT taken while maintaining their PDT/survivability builds, Haut is great.

Haut is good for idling in Einherjar/Dynamis (I pull/crowd control as pld/rdm in einherjar and dynamis). It's good for mobs with AoE physical and magic, where you can keep a solid survivability set on while keeping Aegis for capped MDT. Shit is situational, but Haut is far from useless for a Relic pld.

The only time idling in both PDT and MDT is relevant when you're at risk of being hit by an instant cast spell that can kill you as well as at risk of dying to straight out melee/physical tp. I can only think of one situation that applies, and not many shells do that frequently. As that was your only benefit over a RDM, sorry, the Aegis isn't changing anything if you aren't fighting AV. Last I checked, PLD couldn't maintain a MDT set capable of eating bracelets meteor anyway without outside stoneskin.

Crowd controlling in Ein/Dynamis? Get better mages. Fin.

Oh, so Aegis Plds are only good if you're fighting something hard. Gotcha.

    Get better mages?

How about you get off the soap box "this is technically better if everything is perfect" and realize that both jobs are decent (when geared properly) and stop with the bullshit.

I know it's popular to bash pld, but you're plain retarded if you start labeling it as useless or are so blind as to see when it is just as good or better.

You're just arguing to argue at this point.

Aegis is great, its a 230m excuse to bitch at your whitemage for not having capped shell 5 so you don't have to wear any other gear for mdt cap

While I love PLD and really enjoy any excuse to play it, I have to agree that other than Xarcabard(possibly Tav), PLD has no place in Dynamis. It's just a wasted slot on a DD/Healer/Buffer etc.

Should be no need to crowd control mobs, as if the BLM's have any idea what they're doing, they will never have the chance to even touch them. Time sleeps (which any good mage should be doing) kind of nullify PLD's role in Dynamis. I've said before, it's perfectly understandable in a new/noob Dynamis LS, but anyone who thinks anything of their shell should know it's uselessness.

Right Zhi, pld in dynamis just buys you a bit more wiggle room. I'm in an open dynamis LS, meaning half our blms are great and half don't have a clue. As for pdt/mdt sets at once Thorny: Just last night we had the einherjer chair boss. I had 5 demons on me, and the boss casting gas, with my blms (and healers) stunned from the last to move. Pld with capped MDT and my pdt set definately was useless there for staying alive and ensuring my mages didn't have 6 angry mobs on them at once right? I mean, better mages would have been immune to stunga from dvergrs right?

I must be missing how a RDM/BLU can't do the same things?
