    Consoles and 1 GBPS connections.

    Morning again all

I recently was able to dump DSL, and upgrade to a nice cable internet package. With that, I also finally upgraded to a wireless N router with upto 300 mbps wireless, and 4 gigabit ports.

I found out my 2 laptops with wireless N built in, cap out at 150 mpbs. So I was thinking of downgrading to a router that is half the price of the one I currently have since there is no point in having a 300 mbps router if I can't use it.

The only thing thats holding me back, is wondering if PS3 and Xbox 360 actually benefit from a 1 gbps wired connection? If neither utilizes the wired connection, it will make picking out a new router easier.

    *cliff notes*

Does PS3/Xbox 360 use a 1000MBPS wired internet connection, or cap out at 100MBPS?

    As always,

    Thanks!

Not sure about the 360, but the PS3 does have an onboard 1gb connection. I will say i don't have any clue why you would need a connection speed that fast to a PS3 tho considering i don't know any ISP that will give that kind of speed for anything less than 500~ a month. Also what would the PS3 use that for? The only time i use a 1GB connection is when i'm transferring certain files at work that are about 50gigs. No clue what a person at home would use that for.

    360 is spec'ed as a 100base, PS3 as gigabit.

The main consideration I would look at is whether you feel you'd benefit from internal gigabit ethernet. IE, are you streaming HD video to your PS3 from a gigabit connected media server?

For internet-based content, it's more a matter of what your incoming connection is doing, which is probably not even 10Mbit/sec. For that use, there's currently no point in gigabit, and probably won't be a for a long time.

Even when i stream HD movies to my PS3 it rarly goes over the 80mbps mark so even then i don't see a need for a 1gb connection.

It be more for people who have a server really >.> still for a ps3/360 no reason. If you do heavy duty file transfers for music/video editing maybe? I get by without a 1gb/sec lol and my father does shit for NBC/WWE >.> so really no clue what you could be using that for.

Aye, was the only thing I could think of it that could even hope to use the bandwidth is all. I mean, Blu-Ray itself is spec'ed at 48Mbit/sec max (for AV data), so it shouldn't be necessary, but headroom is nice.

Got it, so the PS3 can utilize it........ but my incoming internet connection cannot.

Make the decision alot easier lol

You can only see true 300 mbps connections to your n-router if you configure it properly. Off the top of my head this means running in n only mode, and probably turning on the dual band feature, assuming it supports it. I only monkeyed with mine once or twice, because the auto 20/40 MHz would interfere with my brother's PS3 controllers. We also had a bunch of g devices, so we couldn't permanently run in n only.

For OP: 150Mb/s is more than you'd get with G, just to let you know. What the above person said is also true.

Its a problem i'm running into now......

I cannot get my brand new laptop to reach speeds above 140 mbps..... it seems to bounce in between 80-140 mpbs. While sitting right next to router

However, a desktop downstairs with a PCI wireless N card installed is getting 260-280mbps with 80% signal strength.

Im at a loss currently lol

    *Edit*

Disabled WMM on my laptop, and now running 240 mbps........ progress. lol
