    Eyjafjallajökull

    http://www1.voanews.com/english/news...-91560844.html

Just hours after European Union transportation ministers agreed on a plan to ease restrictions on airliner traffic, the British National Air Traffic Service reported that the eruption of the volcano in Iceland has strengthened.

A statement released late Monday said a new ash cloud is heading toward Britain. It described the situation as unpredictable and changing.

Earlier Monday, the EU ministers held a video conference and created three flight zones over Europe in an attempt to break the huge travel deadlock that has stranded millions of passengers for days.

One area will be open to all flights, another to limited flights and a third would be a no-fly zone.

The EU's Transport Commissioner, Siim Kallas said there would be no compromise on safety. But he said the plan should allow progressively more planes to fly.

He called it good news for the airline industry, for stranded passengers and for the European economy that has been hard hit by the crisis.

Europe's aviation industry has criticized the way the crisis has been handled, accusing governments of over-reacting and waiting too long to come up with a coordinated plan.

The head of the International Air Transport Association, Giovanni Bisignani said the scale of the economic impact on aviation, reaching $1 billion, is greater than the September 11, 2001, terror attacks when U.S. airspace was closed for three days.

He called the situation "embarrassing" and a "European mess."

Germany's aviation authority on Monday announced the resumption of long-haul flights by the country's flag carrier, Lufthansa, bringing some 15,000 passengers home from East Asia, Africa and North America. And Britain has dispatched three navy ships to bring stranded passengers back home across the English Channel.

So yeah, this volcano might have an economic impact if planes can't fly in that area of the world. The ash cloud won't go away if the ice melting doesn't stop. If there wasn't a glacier encasing the volcano, this eruption would be the typical run of the mill eruption. So yeah, how's everyone coping with this historical event?

My workplace just flew a guy in from Portugal and he was almost canceled on but they ended up making it here.

This will be temporary, all there is to say. Would personally be fucking livid if I was in any sort of situation of need concerning some of those flights though.

Reason I posted this is cause as they thought the eruptions were weakening, it started to strengthen again (and it also started to melt ice again which causes the ash cloud 'see article') which is going to prevent planes from taking off or landing in that whole airspace. 200 million dollars lost per day = Europe might double dip into the recession that they basically are still recovering from now which may impact us over here too...

No no, just the airlines are losing 200million a day, and who the fuck cares about them anyways? If they go out of business it will just lessen the burden on an already over-crowded market.

Also, United States airlines are losing about 20 million dollars per day.

Yes, and I already knew this. Boring news is boring, regardless if it's told again 5 days later.

I'm disappointed in me too, to be honest. We haven't had a thread about it, so why not?

Actually this is new news since they said that flights would all be allowed to fly from 7am today.

It just adds more disruption. An added bonus is that the volcano is only belching out 10% of the emissions that European aviation causes. Gaia is saving her planet!

Apparently this particular volcano has a habit of spitting ash & slowly bubbling for years at a time... If that's true then it's gonna be a looooong time before anyone can get a flight anywhere.

It's causing fucking chaos in schools - can vouch for that one. Hitting right at the end of one of the school holidays where teachers seem particularly obsessed with getting away - lots are stranded all over the place - school I was at today are four staff members down out of about ten in total, and my phone's been going like crazy with cover organizers desperately trying to find a sub teacher for classes.

I'm not complaining - it's a decent chunk of work during what's normally a shit couple of weeks for me but yeah - it's pretty nuts. It's only some areas that have any flights at all going today - think our local airport's still off till at least 1am tomorrow (was 7pm tonight but they keep pushing it further and further back).
