I have no problem conceding on this point. It makes no real difference to the illegitimacy of the analogy -- a head of state saying something heinous is cause for concern, but a fringe 'cleric?'
Even so, in the BBC link, I didn't see an outright denial of the Holocaust. Again, I can fully concede that he denied it, and even hinting at it is seriously flawed, but what I saw were:
I've seen a similar statement in speech transcripts, and his usage of 'myth' refers to there having been the large number of Jewish people killed (6million) -- he believes it to be nowhere near that."They have created a myth today that they call the massacre of Jews and they consider it a principle above God, religions and the prophets," he said.
That again doesn't deny the occurrence of the Holocaust:"If someone were to deny the existence of God... or prophets and religion, they would not bother him.
"However, if someone were to deny the myth of the Jews' massacre, all the Zionist mouthpieces and the governments subservient to the Zionists tear their larynxes and scream against the person as much as they can," he said.
1) myth again refers to # of Jewish people killed
2) conditional statements
In the Huffington Post article, all that I saw was:
No actual real quotes, which is concerning. At least in the BBC article, you have some actual parts of his speech and you can better defend him saying the Holocaust never occurred.Speaking before a crowd of supporters at Tehran University, he questioned whether the Holocaust was a "real event" and called it a pretext for the creation of Israel. He said the Jewish state was founded on "a lie and a mythical claim."
Again, it's a damned embarrassment that Iran's head of state uses such hateful rhetoric, and is insistent upon making such claims. But this is very tangent to the point previously discussed, and I could wholly concede on his denial of the Holocaust (and not, potentially, aspects of it) and my point still remains, that the analogy between Ahmadinejad and this marginal cleric is not legitimate.
And I'm not defending the guy who made the claims about earthquakes anyway -- that guy can go die in a fire for all I care. It's just bad journalism.
