I bought that one in fact.
I bought that one in fact.
But seriously:
You really think any of those songs I listed suck just because they got overplayed?
Personally I don't listen to the radio much so that's not a big issue for me, but not wanting to hear a song for the 50 billionth time in a 1 month period is very different from a song sucking.
Huge generalizations will not help. You think there's better rap than Outkast in the underground? You think there's people doing Beck better than Beck in the underground? You think there's people doing M.I.A. better than her in the underground? You think there's a bunch of trip hop better than Tricky and Portishead in the underground? You think any of the underground Tool/Deftones wannabes are better than them? It's not like all mainstream music is innately terrible, more that limiting yourself to only mainstream music means that you're seriously missing out on the best music out there.
Sure, if you're only listening to the mainstream you're missing *some* great music. But far, far, faaaaaaaar from all.
Hell, just look at the last few decades. There was a point when the biggest parts of the mainstream consisted of The Beatles, Cream, Jimi, Janis, etc. etc.
Then there was a point when the biggest of the mainstream was Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, Zep, etc.
Then there was the 80's (lol).
Then there was a time when the biggest of the mainstream was Nirvana, Soundgarden, STP, AiC, Blind Melon, Candlebox, etc.
Plenty of the best musicians make it.
A lot, sure. All? No. Even saying most is highly debatable. There are independent versions of every genre, and a lot of it is better than its mainstream counterparts
Says who? I mean really, if you're listening to them and it's not live or a bootleg, they've probably put out albums. If they've put out albums, they've probably attempted to make ones that will actually sell.because the artists are actually free to express themselves as they wish and not as some analysis dictates.
I could say "There are mainstream versions of almost every genre, and a lot of it is better because the people are actually good enough to make it, hence the fact that they're popular."
That's no more inaccurate than broad generalizations about how all mainstream music is shitty pop that sells because so and so says we should pay for it.
And yeah, I've bought that one 3 times, lol... and I've only bought undertow once, even though I lost it years and years ago.
Meh, when you say things like this it's hard to have a decent discussion. You repeated exactly what I said, and agreed, then implied that I meant something else and disagreed. I said a lot and meant a lot. I didn't completely bash mainstream music for that matter, only stated that listening to it exclusively means missing out on tons of equally good, if not better music. Hell, take M.I.A. for example. She was around before the Paper Planes single was released you know. In fact, when it ended up turning into such a huge club hit, I was kind of excited because I knew that slews of people would buy her Kala album because of that song and discover a whole new genre of music that they didn't even know existed.
Again: Mainstream music is not innately bad. But limiting your musical tastes to only what you can turn on your radio and hear is a good way to miss out on some truly amazing music out there.
That's all good if that's what you're saying, I just read:
to mean "you're missing the best" as in all of it, since there was no qualifier like "some of" etc.only mainstream music means that you're seriously missing out on the best music out there.
also, paper planes isn't a very good example of what m.i.a. does, really >.>
That's exactly my point.
I just hope that when her new album drops people who like her because of that song will follow through, because Born Free is fucking amazing and deserves the kind of recognition that Paper Planes (it's catchy, I'll give you that, but not even close to her best song) got.
born free is fucking terrible ><
Whaaaat? Admittedly the video goes slightly over the top, but the song version she released on facebook is fucking hot.
What you want? Bucky done gun.
Anyways, months old discussion lol. Not gonna bother hopping in because it'd be retarded with plow.
Anyone listen to Florence and the Machine? French band, I like their music a bit. And what about Santogold? She's working on a new album atm.
err Florence + The Machine is an English band collab, my bad :<
Celine Dion and Ginger Spice had a baby?
Florence + the Machine is one woman. And she's British for fuck's sake. She works with various artists for the sake of recording and performing, but she writes the music. Santi is a fucking boss too.
And Plow, I dunno, I kinda dig the dance punk vibe Maya throws off in Born Free. As a protest song it's admittedly a little weak, but fuuuuck, that shit's catchy.
Well fuck, way to fix both mistakes while I was typing a response.
Edit: And fuck you Plow. Flomach is fucking amazing. Look up "Kiss With a Fist" by her.
Mah bad. Admittedly I don't know too much about them, I've listened to a few of their/her songs and enjoyed them so I figured it'd be worth mentioning. Don't get so mad bro.
Oh and if no one has seen it before, for shame:

I wish there was a fucking release date dammit, can't wait.
Edit: and what's all this illuminati shit I keep seeing all over youtube comments lmfao.
Is the facebook version different that what I've heard from the video/myspace/live performances?
Oh, and btw, Massive Attack put out an album a couple months ago, it's pretty good.
Apparently they're working on a new one with Tricky back... can't fucking wait.
Fuck, I totally meant to keep an eye out for the release of Heligoland but completely forgot about it. Is it any good? I fell like Massive Attack is one of those groups that is completely amazing, but best summed up by their greatest hits album.
Edit: I see that you said "pretty good"... I mean is it worth actually getting? Like Mezzanine type material?
It's... pretty good. lol
Some of it is really similar to tricky's stuff with Martina (and they have her back for at least one), which is damn good in my eyes.
You can find it all on youtube. Here's a couple I like a lot:

I think you'd like most of it, it's somewhat the style you have to be able to appreciate, but it's much more "Hell is Round the Corner" than "Eurochild".
Korn's got a new album coming out...
It's uh... an interesting idea.
They say they're going back to original Korn, and they're kind of backing that up by playing a ton of small shows (they're playing in Wichita at a place that caps at like 400).
But... with no Head and no Silveria that seems a little ridiculous, especially considering Silveria was the most talented of the group by exponential leaps and bounds.
