Maybe this would be a good time to upgrade to 7? lol

Do you have a video card with HDMI capability? The sound part of ATI's HDMI (at least) is also a Realtek codec, so maybe it's set for that?

As with the other recent post, may also want to double check to make sure the "digital output only" option isn't checked or something. Or, conversely, if your speaker set uses digital, then maybe that needs to be checked >_>

If you were planning to upgrade to 7 anyway, then it may be a good time to do that =P
Or get a sound card or USB DAC or whatnot.

windows 7 DOES have a million pre-installed drivers. No longer need to install motherboard/wifi drivers manually for my desktop on a format. Its pretty sweet. Go get it :D

But i've seriously thought of everything to fix your problem. Kinda thinking formatting is your only option, something got way too screwed up D:

This is going to sound really really stupid but I had a similar problem that just made me punch myself in the face when I figured it out. Same drivers.

Try plugging your headphones into the other socket after you update your sound driver. I don't maybe something to think about.

Installed 7 and nothing worked, I ended up going back to XP. I don't like the new age feel of vista/7 they make me sick to my stomach.

Yeah I did system restore - though ff14 music didn't end up working I'm back where i started. Actually I can't stand how XP looks either, I have the super classic look. My problem with 7 was I couldn't figure out how to have My Computer etc on desktop again, nor how to adjust the quick launch to how I wanted it. Basically I hate change and I want everything to always look the same. Even if it looks the same, the whole task bar was a complete mess.

Can put Computer n' such on the desktop by right clicking the desktop, going to Personalize, then going to the Desktop Icon Settings section.

Other stuff, I dunno, things I like, things I don't. I tend to feel like the newer Windows interfaces waste a lot of space, but the new taskbar has grown on me.

I mean, I understand, I used Windows 2000 until '06, used the classic skin on XP until I moved to 7...there's a lot of familiarity there. It doesn't take all that long to get used to 7 though, just can't expect it to be exactly the same.

    Using Vista:
Right click desktop -> Personalize -> Theme -> Classic (Will have the old Win2000 look)

Taskbar/Quicklaunch is already pretty much the same as XP so don't have to do much there

Right click desktop -> Personalize -> Change Desktop Icons for My Computer and such

    --------------

I personally hated 7's UI when I used it during the Beta and yes I'm aware you can change it. When I uninstalled it I just went back to Vista because it's pretty much the same without that UI. I will say this, the Realtek Control Panel is 1,000,000,000 times better in Vista and 7 than XP though... XP's looks like shareware shit you'd find back in the 90s.

I got it to look like win2000 but I couldnt move like.. show desktop, or be able group quicklaunch to the left etc. Theres probably more I'd hate about it if I got to use it more.

Edit: Oh yeah all the folders/icons looked ugly as hell. I like the "icons" option of windows XP.
