    Arizona to illegals: GTFO.

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36735281/ns/politics

The sweeping legislation makes it a crime under state law to be in the country illegally. It also requires local police officers to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal immigrants.

    ...

Arizona has an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants and is the state with the most illegal border crossings, with the harsh, remote desert serving as the gateway for thousands of Mexicans and Central Americans.

Other provisions of the bill allow lawsuits against government agencies that hinder enforcement of immigration laws, and make it illegal to hire illegal immigrants for day labor or knowingly transport them.

The bill takes effect 90 days after the current legislative session ends.
How soon till we see other border states follow suit, if this holds up under court scrutiny?

Never, because Arizona's entire economy will completely collapse.

I was just going to say, like Plow mentioned, i believe i heard that illegal immigrants bring billions in revenue, so this is probably going to mess up Arizona. Kind of ironic i suppose.

I think it might just do that, actually. Point being, will this end up being a rallying cry for other states on immigration reform?

I have a semi-related question. Whenever this immigration debate comes up, inevitably someone on the side of looser restrictions will say something about "we're all immigrants!!" and usually accompany this by asserting that the native americans are the only people who ostensibly have a say in who is and is not an american. But to me this does not follow a clear logic, so maybe someone can explain it to me. It seems to me that after people have been born and raised here for several hundred years, and a unique culture has been established, it seems reasonable to say that they are natives and people arriving now from different cultures are immigrants in every sense.

But apparently that's "not" the case, so exactly how long does a culture have to exist somewhere before it's considered native? It's been 400 years sine Jamestown, that seems sufficiently long to me. Also, can't you extend this logic and say that all Europeans are immigrants in their own land too? That, in fact, no culture has any claim to its land at all because by most accounts homo sapiens originated somewhere in africa/the gulf?

    Is...is this a serious query?

Yes, I want to know how long a culture has to exist somewhere before it has a legitimate basis to call newcomers immigrants, an exact number, and how one arrives at that number. If you delve enough into history, I'm sure you'll find that no nation today is inhabited by the ethnicity or race that settled it originally.

edit: by "inhabit" I mean "governs"

There isn't. It's arbitrary. Or if you wanted to establish that metric here: After your children are born in that land, and live in that land.

So then you guys that responded to me would agree that the argument is completely irrelevant and actually kinda retarded?

you're knowingly bringing up a strawman and then asking for people to agree with you that it's retarded.

what the hell are you doing?

anyhow, thread should be retitled "Arizona to Hispanics: Hope you like profiling"

The argument is so prevalent that I am legitimately asking for someone to explain the logic of it. I'm just trying to clarify the position of the people who responded.

The argument is irrelevant in so far as it's used as the wrong retort to a previous argument.

Saying that even whites are technically immigrants in America amounts to saying that the land really belongs to no one, and can be used as a counter-argument against the claim that America somehow inherently belongs to white or european people. Even then, it's not exactly the most eloquent argument.

Might as well start handing down striped pyjamas w/ the star of David while we're at it

Btw, didn't Arizona's legislature pass a Birther bill too? When you have people, or rather "leaders" in the legislature that believe Obama was born in Kenya... you gotta stop for a second and think like 'what the fuck is going on here?'
