Wireless problem

I am back home for the summer and the router that used to work last year no longer seems to work. We can connect to nearby wireless networks that aren't protected just fine but this router (D-link 802.11g 2.4ghz) won't connect for any of the computers in the house.

The lights on the front of the router seems to be fine (green lights for power and Wlan are lit up and Status has a blinking green, all other boxes have no lights (WAN, 1,2,3,4)

I've tried repairing disabling/enabling on the computer side and have physically reset and disconnected/reconnected cords on the router itself to try to fix it but nothing works.

When you mouse over the wireless thing in the popup tray at the bottom it says all the good stuff like good speed and excellent signal and status:connected.

Little bastard won't send out those interweb signals so does anyone know what could be the problem.

Do you even see it as an available wireless network?

either way, hook up an ethernet cord into it and log into it and verify your SSID and password is correct.

Would doing the ethernet thing verify if someone has 'stolen' or locked us out of the signal? I think my dad set this up years ago so I don't know what the SSID was (or what that even is) and the network was never password protected.

If it's never been manually setup you can google the router model and find the default login user and pass to change it or reset it, just in case. This only helps if you can connect to the network itself, with or without internet access. Otherwise what you can try is if it has wired ethernet ports available, plugging in one of the PCs so as not to rely on the wireless and see if that allows you to access the internet or gets you anywhere.

Did this router work prior to you coming home within the last year or is this just something you noticed now because you haven't been home? Assuming other people would've been using it all along.

Ok I'll try those things tomorrow. I think it does say I'm connected to the network but not the internet, if that makes sense.

The wireless was for sure not working at christmas break because I remember trying a few things that didn't work so I just ignored the wireless altogether (plugged directly from the modem to the computer so my dad could stop using the neighbours wireless) but now that I brought my computer home for the summer I will have to use the non working wireless. It worked last summer so sometime between then and christmas it stopped.

Hold it for 10 seconds and it will reset router to factory settings, plug an ethernet cord, open a browser and go to 192.168.0.1 and login: admin password: no password and change wireless settings

Ok, so I am using the router but as wired and the internet works fine through it that way. I went to the 192.168.0.1 and logged on fine but I don't really know what I can do or change from here.

I am going to try to resetup the wireless to see if that does anything.

Ok it seems to work. I think it may have been the cords set up wrong since I had to disconnect things to make it wired and may have set it back up differently (correctly) so maybe I'm just an idiot or re setting up the network made it work.

With that done I have a question about wireless receivers. I currently use a external usb D-link one but I think most computers use ones that are plugged in inside the actual computer. When I had the computer built I don't think I got one because I used wired so are those types of receivers generally faster than any external one and if they are what are the good/cheap ones to get.

I can only get 2/5 bars (~30 feet and a wall or 2 in the way) and it's noticeably slower than the computer that is just a few feet away from the wireless router

Mostly depends on the kind of antenna used, integrated USB keys, built in cards antennas are baddddd.

Something with an independant antenna will net you better result, but I don't know exactly how much since I use all wired.
