^ This. Star Wars, FFXIV, and WoW: Cata are the only true big names on the horizon.

Think you are underestimating Tera online personally, WoW cata will overshadow all of them anyway including FF14.

I keep pretty abreast of the MMO market, and I have barely heard peep of Tera online. It just gets flooded down in the "also ran" category.

People say the same thing about Mortal Online, said the same thing about Age of Conan, said the same thing about Warhammer, said the same thing about Star Trek Online, said the same thing about Darkfall Online...

Tera Online isn't going to be that big simply because it uses "skill" based combat.

Anyone remember the last MMO to promise that, I think it was Darkfail?

I'm still baffled how anyone could say the same thing about Star Trek & Mortal Online.. People really are gullible.

"Hay, now you can pay 50$ to get access to beta!" "AWESOME!"

WoW cata is an expansion tho, so i dont know how well it will do to capture new subscribers. i think it will excell more at bringing back old vets and keeping current subscribers on board.

anyway you look at it, the PC market will have plenty of comp for FFXIV, but SE is not without its advantages. PS3 is almost the trump card, because while you have a bunch of MMO's on the PC, you have none at all on the ps3. DC universe doesnt look anywhere near complete, so im betting ffxiv comes out first. its a pool solely reserved for ffxiv. it all depends on how they handle it. if they can manage to catch the attention of a decent amount of PC players, and a good amount of ps3 users at launch, i think FFXIV will be off to a great start, especialy comin out i december.

It is, which is the main reason why SE can afford to push their product back if they feel the need to.

DC universe will be the same as city of heroes/villians: A niche-market game that will struggle to hold over 250k subs, but will never aspire for more than 250k subs. Many companies are actually pleased to consistently hold a quarter of a million paid subs.

Stats like that just make WoW's loose stranglehold on the market even more impressive. I still have no idea how any MMO could garner more than 2 million subs at the same time, even if it is a worldwide game, and I play WoW myself.

I wish they would have brought out a Dungeon Siege-based MMO. I'd have torn that shit up. I always loved that genre's system.

After playing Tera a couple weekends ago, I think it will be a "fun" game that sticks around for a bit, and may do well initially, but unless they have A LOT of content hidden I don't think it will hold a lot of people in the long run. I do think it will live for a while though, it is a rather fun game and a nice change of pace from your traditional MMO. I like to think of it as WoW with a Diablo type gameplay. /offtopic

edit: I also got an update newsletter today about a game called Heroes of Telara (which has been renamed Rift: Planes of Telara) that is expected to release in 2011 sometime. I don't think it's a major player now, but who knows, if things go their way that could change by next year. Not that this really impacts XIV...

Correction ... Blizzard not stating release dates is a new thing. While they are always at a "its done when its done" mentality, they did set a firm release date for Burning Crusade only to pull that particular card and pushed it back nearly 4 months from its original November target date. It is only since TBC that they will flat out not put a date on things until they are sure.

You are correct about the community perception. Which is going to be the biggest hurdle for XIV. Outside the loyal XI community, the game has a bad reputation. One of being far too grindy and all together far too time consuming (I laugh at the last part every time I load up WoW.) Overcoming the "its too grindy" idea and being fun enough to silence the inevitable comparisons to Blizzard's giant elephant in the room will be incredibly difficult.

How they're planning to keep the players playing, that I would be more concerned about.
That being said, if SE will be happy with a game that has a moderate amount of players in its base, then all will be well. SE is smart enough to realize they aren't going to put out a game that gets 2-3 million players overnight. They will be happy with that 750k that XI once capped out at in its prime.

I saw Rift in the title and I got hopeful that it was set in the Palladium Books Rifts universe, but it's not. I am disappoint.

you guys have a unique definition for "big name MMO".

My eye is on TERA mainly because of the stray away from traditional MMO combat systems.

And i haven't seen any mention of APB in here either, for shame. Its one people should be excited for, thats all i'm gonna say on that.

ON TOPIC: i see. don't take this bullshit like its the law, i am 99% sure this game will get delayed into spring '11 AT LEAST.

Not at all, for all you know the connection issues may be nearly completely resolved the next time alpha testing occurs.

You guys argue so much lol, its like no one on here has anything better to do. Ive started reading news sites becuase of that shizz. what happened to everyone getting along?

Anyways, i cant wait for the game! I guess i have to comment because of the total boner i just got(for no apparent reason), because regardless of whether it comes out in 2010 or 2011 its still going to be a great game. And id rather have time to get a craft up or level other jobs while i wait for endgame content. But i can also see the value in having a completed game.

If anyone ever finds a Korean MMO that isn't a total grindfest please let me know. I love the beautiful graphics and flashy animations they use, but I've never heard of one that didn't suffer from a crippling lack of content.

I think FF14 won't ever go against the next WoW expansion even if they'll be released at the same time, which will be unlikely.
They both are MMO indeed, but they target quite a different audience. Aside from all the eastern players, FF14 is coming up inspired by a certain "plain fantasy core" that's miles away from WoW and it will probably gather all those RPG players that are much more inclined to Jp style gameplay.

Both Warhammer and Conan targeted the same exact player base as WoW (plus Conan who tried to sell on bewbz), challenged the Blizzard titan and miserably failed. I'm not seeing FF14 doing the same, really.
