Changing your profession is not worth it imo. Blizzard flip things around way too often to bother. If you're raiding for world first, sure,, but otherwise, it's just too much trouble for the benefit.

I retract all my comments about engineering being not worth it after using the Highpowered Bolt Gun tonight, on Maloriak it was 5-8% of my overall damage and it hit for 200k per shot.

Most professions are extremely balanced at the moment except leatherworking because it replaces non-ideal rating points with primary stats.

Engi and Tailoring both give slightly better than 80 primary stat over time, but are procs rather than 100% uptime like the rest of the profs. Engi also gets the helm (perfectly itemized 359 epic, that's a pretty solid buff still) and toys.

Herbalism/Skinning/Mining give 80 non-ideal rating (haste cooldown/crit/stam) and thus are slightly weaker than profs that give primary stats, which is to be expected of gathering profs.

Of the remaining profs, Alchemy is probably the best for people who raid, as it saves me probably 700-800g per raid night between the extra flask duration and mysterious potions in lieu of mana potions.

Ehh if you only tank, you can get away with mining as it's only 1 less stam then what jc/bs will open up to you. Of course if you switch to a dps or healing spec, then it becomes absolutely useless.

The reality of things is that pretty much every tank needs to be able to switch to a DPS spec if a fight requires it. Even in 25-man there are one-tank fights. And that's not even opening the can of worms that is debating the value of stam vs other stats for tanks.

Tailoring, Engineering, and LC are all three quite a bit ahead of the normal good professions of JC/BS/Enchanting/Alch. Compared to wrath where only Engineering was unbalanced of all those professions.

Tailoring and Engineering are only 16 base points ahead -- and that's if you can use int and don't mind it being a proc / button instead of a constant value. Notably, both of these were similarly better/worse in Wrath.

LC is definitely broken good and should be nerfed.

16 INT that is stackable with cool downs plus a head piece that is unbeatable at the moment. Just like how Engineering was undoubtedly unbalanced for casters in WOTLK even though it was only 68 haste vs the normal 42 SP you would get from other professions.

The 16 int is only stackable for engineering, it's a random proc for tailoring. I don't think tailoring is that OP really. Engineering is, maybe a little, and leatherworking definitely is.

But then if recall wrath, where herbalism sucked shit the entire expansion....

+80 Int total to rings on my lock, subpar to tailoring (on average), leatherworking or engineering, but it's far from 'shit'.

Edit: If you had said Skinning? Yeah, definitely

I'm going to start up a Warrior today to end up as main spec prot.

Should I just level as miner and flower picker until cap and then choose? What are the best prot professions? I've heard that the paper assassin is actually pretty damn good and the other engineering perks are handy also. Is mining/eng. a good choice for tanks?

It hurts my brain to think about leveling a third engineer though.

Level as a gathering prof, its faster xp (and profitable) when you can hit nodes while leveling. Once you hit 85, switch to your desired profs.

If that price holds, I have around 30000 gold worth of shitty uncut gems.
Even just questing, people are pulling more gold in at this point than they were in Wrath. Considering a green quality gem vendors for 5g all by itself, I could theoretically just fly in circles mining/prospecting and pull in a pile of cash (never mind the blue gems that come along with it).

No, Ench is shit; the biggest sell point about enchanting is free/cheap enchants for all your toons, plus you can mail your greens and make even more money or whatever, in that dept I don't think there is a stronger craft, except maybe Tailoring if you do many dungeons or dailies.

Engineering: Since patch 4.0.1, tinkers now stack with normal enchants. Synapse Springs tinker to gloves provides 480 Int for 12 seconds with a 60 second CD. This averages to a 96 Int bonus. Engineering also provides further perks such as [Flexweave Underlay]. [Nitro Boosts] and Grounded Plasma Shield have a chance to fail and cause serious averse effects, and are not reliable in a raid.

Leatherworking: 130 Int to bracers in place of 65 haste or crit, giving an estimated 100 Int bonus.

Jewelcrafting: 3 [Brilliant Chimera's Eye] in place of [Brilliant Inferno Ruby] gives 81 Int.

Blacksmithing: Extra sockets into wrists and gloves provides 2 additional Brilliant Inferno Ruby's, providing an 80 Int bonus.

Alchemy: Mixology, combined with [Flask of the Draconic Mind] provides an 80 Int bonus.

Enchanting: 40 Int to each ring provides an 80 Int bonus.

Inscription: 130 Int/25 haste shoulder enchant is an 80 Int bonus over the regular enchant.

Tailoring: Lightweave Embroidery gives 580 Int for 15 seconds on a 45 second ICD. This averages to 193.3 Int, which replaces the normal 50 Int enchant, providing only a 143.3 Int bonus. Tailoring currently gives the greatest DPS increase of all the professions.

Herbalism: Lifeblood is now a DPS cooldown providing 480 haste for 20 seconds on a 2 minute CD. This averages to an 80 haste bonus.

    Skinning: 80 crit.

Mining: Stam, useless from a DPS perspective.
From EJ, but source doesn't really matter, it's on par with 3 other crafts, sub par to 4 (and one of those only by 1 int), and better than 3 others. If that is 'shit', then sure, it's shit
