I hate gaming wirelessly because of the extra lag, but the gaming routers are by far superior. They break down packets faster creating less lag. Significantly faster.

I only use wireless for cell phones and laptops. I run cat 6 cables for desktop's/consoles etc.

I only run the wires because I have the cable and connectors from work. Makes it easier when you do it often.

I have an El Cheapo router atm. I get shitty gameplay / lag / kicked when I go through my router. When I go straight from modem I get no lag / beast mode host.
