Frustrated with AC2

I am stuck between sequence 6 & 7. Present 02, Acre. I can't figure out how to climb to the top of the tower. I'm stuck in the middle of the tower where there is only a door with a piece of lumber sticking out above it with a light hanging from it. I know if I can grab on to the lumber I'll be able to make it to the top but it's not letting me grab on to it. I've been around the tower and cannot find any other place to climb up further. I'm really starting to get frustrated here. I've tried every way to grab on to the piece of lumber but can't, please help an idiot.

Can't remember that point of the game specifically, but have you tried running directly up the wall beside the point of lumber and then jumping towards it?

Could the game be glitched? I'm dumb when it comes to shit like this so I don't know.

If I'm not mistaken, there's a lamp with a pole jutting out from the tower. Stand under it and do a flat-footed jump (R2 + X I believe, or something similar)

Ok, so I was thinking of the right spot. What I did was what I mentioned trying, where you run up vertically near it, and then jump as you hold the direction towards the lumber jutting out, Ezio should jump towards it and grab hold.

Both my roommate and I had problems with that exact part, just a matter of trying everything we could to get up it. If I had to do it again, I'm sure it would be just as hard.
