fuck i want this phone
The best part about this, is that I'm not allowed to use a router here, so if I can just set this up so I can go online on my DS, or whatever else, <3

I picked up an evo the other day, and it's sort of big, but not xbawks huge. It was about the size of my iphone in it's otterbox. I guess if you put a large case around it, it could get a bit bulky.
The only real beef I have with that is it's size. Screen is nice, but I wear jersey shorts pretty much all the time, and a rectangular bulge of that size is... Not ideal. That's why I'm sticking with iPhone, and maybe because I'm locked to the devils network.
It's wide but it's fairly thin, so it's not really that bad in a pocket. Barhopping last night was comparing it to a friend's phone since she's on Sprint too and was thinking about getting it. I have a Seidio case on mine (the re-branded ones they sell in Best Buy) and compared to her Blackberry in an Otterbox the size difference was pretty negligible.
After seeing it pass the scratch test video with flying colors, I decided not to get a screen protector on it. The only thing is on the back I put a 3M carbon Fiber vinyl on it for looks and also so it doesn't scratch (plastic is very susceptible to that) Not really pleased with how it came out but I still like it better than the normal plastic backing

Does the EVO 4G get hot when playing games on Snesoid?
does snesoid let you save games to the rom without having to do save states and stuff? i don't wanna pay if i can avoid it lol.
we should compile a list of useful apps we're all using. there's tons of lists on android/ppc forums but most people don't really describe what they do.
RE: phone size
i used a palm pre before the evo and it's way smaller than both the evo and iphone. it took me all of 5 seconds to get used to it and another 5 to completely forget i had used any other phone. it's only slightly bigger than the iphone so if you didn't have issues with that, you won't with the evo. try to google a size comparison.
Evo having screen issues?
http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/13/h...ration-issues/
Mine has slight light leakage on the bottom, but no separation to speak of yet..
ouch
Not really. The battery stays a little warm under normal use, but nothing that could be considered remotely uncomfortable or something you even notice after using it for awhile. The only time I've noticeably seen a temp increase is when tethering for extended periods of time.
No screen separation on mine, and even if there was my case is pretty damn tight and would probably hold it in place anyways.
Oh and on the Snesoid subject, the .sav file used by it can be renamed to .srm and used with Snes9x/ZSNES. I did that earlier in the week because the chase the rat portion of Chrono Trigger was driving me insane with the touchscreen controls. Hopefully Sense can be completely removed from the Evo at some point soon so a Wii controller can be used with it, though I'd look like a complete dipshit pulling that out and setting up the Evo w/ the kickstand in class.
dunno if anyone's gotten shields for theirs yet, but the shield from ghost armor is pretty good. invis shield and zagg are really rubbery and really take away from the feel of the screen. but ghost armor is pretty smooth and it's very smudge proof. i'm not 100% sure you even need to scratch protect it (check the evo scratch test on youtube) but it's pretty nice for the smudge protection.
as far as apps i'm using:
advanced task killer: i've actually read an article or two about not using task killers but it's still a useful app for closing some things that won't close on their own. apparently it's better to not close anything since stuff in the background supposedly doesn't use any resources.
dolphin browser HD: pretty cool browser. allows for tabbed browsing, addons, and gestures.
goggles: fun app. lets you take a snapshot of any icon, figures out what it is and googles it for you.
handcent sms: lets you customize pretty much every single thing when it comes to text messaging. really nice if you text quite a bit and would like some more options beyond the stock ones.
layar: interesting virtual reality plane kinda app. it detects your location and you can see pop-ups of places like bars, restaurants on the screen like a hud.
swype: super awesome virtual keyboard. lets you just do a connect the dots type thing for any word you type without having to lift your finger. way easier and faster to type, more accurate than using two thumbs and pretty much negates the need for landscape mode.
Oh and apps I've found super useful -
K-9 Mail - Standard mail client, but uses less CPU then Gmail does.
Dolphin Browser HD - Feels faster then stock browser, and supports tabbed browsing
Brut Google Maps - Allows tile caching to the SD, so it loads everything ALOT faster, also allows navigation outside of the US
Autostarts (requires root) - This one is killer, requires alot of setup but once you get it going it's awesome. Basically you can set it to prevent apps from starting up, i.e. I can tell it to keep Qik/Mixzing/anything from starting up on boot, kill apps from starting up when you connect to Wifi, etc., so the phone gets going faster and keeps you from having to use a task killer to clean out your system.
Mixzing - Favorite media player, nothing special persay, I just feel it has the cleanest interface
Titanium Backup (requires root) - if mess around with any custom ROMs, you will need this, period. Long story short it backs up all your user apps and all your system settings, so after you flash a new ROM, just download Titanium Backup of the marketplace, hit restore and reboot, and everything is back in place.
Wireless Tether (root again) - If you need this explained to you why did you buy an Android phone?
SystemPanel - Lets you monitor battery drain, what's eating up CPU cycles, usage levels, etc. Has very clean UI as well.
And games - Snesoid, Gameboid, CalicoChaser (side scrolling beat em up RPG), Zenonia (google it), and Pocket Empires (Strategy MMO). Pocket Empires is free, rest have demos/paid versions.
I mean for using it on computer, I moved the save file over to my computer to use a keyboard and then knocked it back over to my Evo to keep playing.
And for task killers yeah, I keep mine on my phone in case an app freezes up and won't give me a force close option, but otherwise it's just hanging out being itself. I use TaskPanel since it have the cleanest interface to me.
Autostarts example, seriously this program is amazing if you take the time to set it up. Completely eliminates the need for task killers and is just a general problem solver of killing annoying apps before they start (but ones you can't delete for whatever reason or need to use)
First pic is a snippet of my startup, basically killing stuff that there really isn't any point to having boot up when my phone is turned on.

Second pic is showing how specific it gets, you can literally tweak this for any event on your computer.

For the unaware Rosie Utility is the Sense UI, which since I'm running Launcher Pro now there's no reason for it to be running on my phone. Same principle with me stopping Gmail or Mail, I use K-9 so this prevents either of them from even starting up on my phone.
It does nothing to prevent you from using an app manually, it just stops apps from launching in response to system events.
ok i gotcha.
has anyone found an app that replaces the battery icon at the top with an actual % one? i keep hearing about how normal battery apps have a continual effect on the battery itself since they have to keep on checking. plus i'd rather just eyeball the icon up top to see how much i have left.
