I like the idea of an android thread, but this us a perfectly good evo thread. I don't see people going into the iphone thread and shitting on it. This thread hasn't really been about anything apple since the second page. Should just rename it to the evo thread. We were having a fairly civilized discussion for the majority of the thread lol.


In other news- did anyone install that update two days ago? I'm shooting myself for doing it especially after sprint pulled it... it majorly screwed up my data services. Sometimes the mobile network is labled as failed, and sprint has fine so far as having me factory reset they phone to no avail. The rep figured they phone is defective and the sprint store here is out.

I also can't seem to get wired tethering to work without a3rd party app- htc's built in version is giving me a network error, but I've heard if it working for some people.. Sprint rep said I need the tetheringg package but I thought that's only necessary for the wifi hotspots.

Thoughts?

I was always under the impression that the built-in tether app was for hotspot only. For your data the update might have changed your baseband. You could try to reflash stock radio or something. I would also highly recommend rooting your phone. It just gives a lot more freedom as well as free tether apps.

But I love this thing and just got my employer to pay for the extended battery, so booya. Time to enable all the pretty graphics again!

To the above, I used pdanet for tethering, it works just fine and it's free. I dunno how Sprint works exactly but on Verizon you have to pay to use their built in tethering.

Sprint is 30 bucks a month for the hotspot feature, which also includes tethering.

Idk enough about rooting or anything to deal with baseband changing. I think I'm just going to try to find a sprint store to replace the phone, as I feel there is something wacky with it anyways (it had major issues activating when I first got it, along with light leakage) then I'll attempt rooting it.

I don't want to root this one, find it still had some issue, and have to take it back anyway (will I even be able to get rid of a legit root and return it anyway or will that void my warrantee?)

I know with like jailbreaks you can just factory reset, but if I've actually replaced the rom on the phone that seems impossible, in which case I'd really be up the creek without a paddle

I can't wait to be able to tinker with my phone with this stuff, just want to get all this weird shit worked out first.

No. Do not root it if you plan on taking it back. Its not reversible on most phones.

Apparently the white only applies to the back and the front is still black. Thought the white might 've been ok, but seeing how the finished product looks cements the black version as the one to get in my eyes..

So I got my new Evo (replaced the defective one) and its working like a charm, updated and all. I got the phone within 18 hours of ordering it, and I'm happy. Sprints customer service isn't 5 star, but they certainly got the phone out to my way faster than I expected, and I got my bill down to 40 bucks this month for all the inconvenience.


Side question (I'll post this in the Android thread if you guys arent sure maybe more people check that): I've been using the Astro File Manager to install my backed up apps after all these factory resets/phone switch, but the android marketplace doesnt recognize that I have them installed, and thus no updates will ever be found for the apps. Any way to remedy this?

I'm also concerned how this will play out if I root, because frankly im sick of redoing everything (this will be the 5th time.) Unless I can root without losing my phones state which I highly doubt. Thanks!

If your phone is rooted you can use Titanium Backup, which literally just copies over your apps in the exact state they're in, settings/data and all. And once you flash on a new ROM or had to wipe for whatever reason, you just restore them and they work just as they did before, Market updates and all.

And yes, White Evo looks stupid as all hell, really don't understand why they didn't try to make it all white.

I agree with the white design being gay (should have made it all white as Kran said) but hey, it's variety and I'm sure at least a couple hundred people will want one and who knows may even sway people from not getting one at all. Anything to get a bigger user base I say. It's not like black isn't available.

Severely disappointed to to see that the whole phone is indeed not white. On another note, my girlfriend has had an Evo for 26 days or so and is strongly contemplating taking it back before her 30 days are up. Gotta say I'd take it back, simply because its just not worth the money to have it right now for me. But totally go for it if you'd use it for more than a calendar/games/internet.

But in spirit of the debate i've touched and used both phones and like the evo more because of Android, but id have to say the iphone has a more superiorly built feel.
