Question asbout splittting rent

So my roommates girlfriend is going to be moving in with us soon and she has said that she wants to pay part of the rent. My question is since they are sharing a room how much would be fair for her to pay, it doesn't quite seem fair to split it 3 ways. Our rent is $875 a month. Also as far as utilities go splitting that 3 ways is probably best right?

3 way for utilities is fine. Just make her pay half of whatever your roommate is paying? Or is that crazy talk?

If you guys split the rent evenly now - 437.50 Each. Then it should now be:

You - 437.50
Them - 218.75 each.

If you guys pay rent for square feet the numbers will be different but same shit. Just her paying half the rent for the room.

I agree w/ Takedown. While the girl may only be sharing the bfs bedroom, shes going to be equally (or more so, lol females) using the bathroom more, and using the kitchen, living room, and w/e other rooms you have just as much as you two.

I guess it all depends on how nice you are feeling. I'm in the same boat. Im renting my second bedroom to a good friend of mine and her friend. Since i was already paying the rent myself fine before, and they are having some serious money issues, I just let them pay 1/8 each. I cant really justify myself making them each pay 1/3 of the rent to share a bedroom. And hell i still get 300 a month extra to spend so i cant complain. So i guess it depends on your money situation, and how nice you want to be.

I find that it tends to be easier if you just split it three ways. $291.67 three ways. My reasoning is that, over a long enough timeline, things will even out. Now this will only work if there is no falling out between the three of you.

It's like going out to eat with friends (on a regular basis.) Easier to just split the bill evenly because eventually, it will all even out. If you only get a salad this time, you may get the surf + turf next time. It all works out.

Easy way: 3 way split

hard way: TotalCost/m^2 of residence, calculate your rooms share, their rooms share, and 3 way the remainder.

practical example (adjust numbers as necessary):

livable area: 100 m^2
Rent: 875 month
Your room: 15m^2
their room 20m^2
remainder: 65m^2 (I want to live there ;

You'd do 875/100 = 8,75 per m^2
Your room would be 15*8,75 = 131,25
their room would be 20*8,75 = 175 ( 87,5 for each of them )
the rest would be 65 * 8,75 => 568,75 total ( 189,58 each )

so for you it'd be 131,25 + 189,58 = 320,8333 (etc.)
for each of them it'd be 87,5 + 189,58 = 277,08 (round off as wanted/needed etc.)

You can squeeze utilities in there as well, or keep that as an even 3 way (even 3 way probably best.)

You pay for what you use.

One thing you need to think about.

A written agreement/contract that you THREE sign with a witness in place to see the signed contract. Too many times I've seen shit like "oh, she's using up all our food, doesn't pay a damn cent, and is basically a freeloader."

If you have to take her (and him) to court to get the rent paid, you have a contract that shows you three agreed on these terms.

3 way or 1/2 of her BF's, whatever you decide, make sure you spell it out clearly.

Chiming in because i was in a very similar setup last year before moving to my current place. Was me, my husband and our friend(roommate), and we split everything 3 ways, 'cept groceries, and i hated it.

Not because we were paying more, but because we were utilizing the same space as our roommate but paying $1000 compared to her $500. Personally I think for rent, it should be per room. If you're sharing a room, that rooms rent is split by the people living there. All other things should be split 3 way obviously (electric, gas, etc).

I would split rent by room (she pays half of what he's paying) and utilities (electricity, heat, cable/internet) 3 ways. Had a room-mate that had his girlfriend stay over all the time and defiantly noticed the electric bill go up a couple of dollars every month cause she would blow dry her hair for like 30 mins every morning and cranked the heat up in his room.
