Anyone live around Ulster County NY?

Planning on moving down to the area in early August with the gf. I can't find shit online about rental prices so I was wondering if anyone has an idea about the average price down there for a 1 bedroom/1bath apt. Also what's the job situation down there? Is there enough work to be able to afford to pay the average rent. I'm coming from upstate NY where there is absolutely no work other then a few jobs down in Albany.

Think it depends on what kinda job you guys are looking for. I'm in Orange County which is slightly more south and rent mostly depends on what town you're living in and the kind of people living there.

I know plenty of people sharing like two bedroom/small homes for around $1.2k and such but it could probably be cheaper for the more rural towns where there aren't as much people.

You try Craigslist Hudson Valley? May not be the most accurate source but it'll give you some type of idea. http://hudsonvalley.craigslist.org/

I'm in Rockland County which tends to fall between Orange and Westchester in pricing, the latter being more expensive. Rule of thumb is the closer you get to the city, the more expenaive rent will be, with few exceptions. Ulster is probably comparative to Orange, but I'm no expert.

Kingston is in Ulster County..... That's where my Ulster County jury summons sends me anyways lol.

I'm just outside of New Paltz in the Hamlet of Wallkill, which is southern Ulster, just over the Orange County Border.

Rent is cheaper than in Orange, but depending on the area I don't know where the fuck you are going to find a job lol. Newburgh/Kingston are the big "urban" areas around that you will find some form or work, anywhere else is going to be a crap shoot really.. Rent wise you are looking $850+ for a 1 bedroom.

Depending on what kind of job you are looking for, if you end up near me you can find a retail job REALLY easy at the Woodbury Commons. It's about an 45 minutes south of where I live. If you are up in the Kingston area I would think the commute wouldn't be worth it to work there though.

Girlfriend grew up in Rosendale. There's a wal mart in Kingston and a decent mall. Also, 5 Guys Burgers.

You're going to want to look for a job around the Kingston and Poughkeepsie area (you're going to have to take the bridge to get to Poughkeepsie).

    Some companies too look into:

    Time Warner (Ulster)
    Cablevision (Dutchess)
    IBM (Ulster/Dutchess)
    Central Hudson (Ulster/Dutchess)
CIA (Dutchess) (Culinary Institute of America)

As far as rent goes, I'm paying 1050 for a one bed room in Dutchess with a dog. Cable is 100 a month with telephone, internet and cable, and electric is like 12 bucks a month for us.

    Good luck.

    Edit:
Also, Margaretville is really cheap and has some amazing hunting spots.

Ulster county is a huge area, and the rent is going to be very variable depending on the town. As far as jobs, the whole county is basically a dead-end unless you run your own business or are something like a doctor/teacher/etc. Basically everyone with any sort of college education moves and doesn't come back if that tells you anything.

Wow I would never think to see so many Ulster County residents on BG.. Saugerties area here myself (10 minutes outside kingston)

Ulster county rent prices can vary a bit depending on where you go as others have said.

What kind of job were you looking for?

There's some nice spots over there. Commuting over the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge every day is preventing me from moving to that side though lol.

My office is over in Florida (near Warwick). I drive back roads only and it takes like 40 minutes. Any more commuting I would probably kill myself, hate driving so much now lol.

Yea i know kingston is in ulster county haha. Mostly all of my friends live in poughkeepsie so its hard to get them over the hudson (flaming river of acid as i call it) to hang out. Generally i can get them to stop by Snappper Magees when im working but even then its not that often haha.

Your best bet is to look at the newspapers online, or i can browse the Monday paper and post what i see for kingston for a general idea. but as it was said before, it varies a lot depending on where you go.

Any of you guys been to Truman's on a Saturday?

My friend is having everyone go out for his birthday that night to Truman's. I don't mind clubs, but I can't stand when the place gets so fucking packed you can't move.

I just assumed it got that busy b/c it's right in New Paltz lol.

Anyone been there on a Saturday that can let me know?

I was supposed to go there a couple of months ago for my friend's 21st birthday but I ended up not going at the last minute. From what I hear, expect a lot of young chicks to be there because entry is 18+.

You know, the ones that sit there with their group of friends giggling, making a big deal about everything that happens.

    Ugh....

I'm 26 and Engaged. That is one of the last things I want to deal with is fucking young kids.

18+ to enter automatically is a no deal for me lol.

    Thanks for the heads up.
