Not having played Hexen is a sin. I even have Hexen II on my PSP.

And refusing to acknowledge the present and only planning for the future is a bad way to do business. For all we know some miracle innovation could come to Flash and suddenly HTML5 will be the betamax of the internet. Also, in that interview Jobs talks like apparently no one uses computers anymore. Just because Macintosh is a nonexistent presence in the home computer market does not make this the "mobile era"

What do home computers have to do with this? No system really discourages you from using flash on your desktop/laptop.

And desktop sales have been in a decline for the past ten years. The rapid decline already started way back in 2005~

We may not completely be in a "mobile era", but we are fast approaching there. I mean, come on...just look at the second half of 2000s....this isn't a Mac/PC issue, the industry itself is changing.

I see this silly quote thrown around a lot. Desktop sales have been in a 'decline' because everybody already has one, not necessarily because interest has decreased. The late 1990s/early 2000s was a transformation period in which a very low number of people had home computers to a world where almost everyone has one. So logically, of course sales would decrease from then. Casual computer users don't upgrade on the same basis as enthusiasts, and typically take around 4-5 years to purchase a new one.

To suggest that desktops are going the way of the dodo is a pretty bold statement that I'd have to disagree with. They'll always be cheaper, faster, run cooler, be more reliable and powerful than laptops on a per-dollar basis simply because they don't have to be concerned with mobility, and for that reason alone, they're going to be around for a very long time. I have a desktop for when I need power and speed, and I have a laptop/iphone for when I need mobility.

That's not to say that mobile technology won't become more common for people who do nothing but check their email and browse the web, but that's been happening for years now, and I don't see too many people abandoning their desktop for their iphone. In my experience, people like to have a home station and a mobile unit for maximum comfiness.

We don't know what Adobe will be doing with flash in the next 10 years before HTML5 becomes a standard, but I'm pretty sure they view it as a direct threat and will sure as hell be making significant changes to Flash to protect their investment. Regardless, the most likely outcome of the whole debacle is that HTML5 and Flash will still probably be used side-by-side.

And refusing to acknowledge the present and only planning for the future is a bad way to do business.
Precisely. I can see why Apple would block flash to protect its app library, but the hypocrisy is a bit much.

...yet you refuse to see that the entire industry is focusing more and more on mobile computers/devices each day? Dealer websites open with laptop computers on their main page, retail stores place laptop computers ahead of desktops, commercials on mass media use laptop computers to represent "computers" as a whole.

...and more importantly, laptop sales generate much more revenue than desktop.

The number of people using laptop as a primary computer has been increasing rapidly for years now. And guess what, its the other way around for desktop computers.

I don't know how to put this more clearly, but if you are claiming that desktop computers aren't in a decline in terms of popularity then I've got nothing to say to you....Because its just way too fucking obvious.

We don't know what Adobe will be doing with flash in the next 10 years before HTML5 becomes a standard, but I'm pretty sure they view it as a direct threat and will sure as hell be making significant changes to Flash to protect their investment.
If they do, then good for them and the industry...I can actually bitch at Apple then. I honestly don't care either way, I've only downloaded one single app so far for my first-gen iTouch that I got for free and I don't like iPhone.

"See that html5?!?!?!?!?!" type of attitude is nothing but a piss contest.

To be fair, I may be thinking too much in terms of work. Certainly, mobile units are more popular among casual users. They don't need anything more than a browser and 100GB and they'll be happy. Most of them would be happy with a crippled netbook. But I would hardly say its the death of the desktop. Enthusiasts, schools, studios and businesses are significant purchasers of them, and you're not about to see them get replaced with laptops. You almost make it seem like they'll disappear off the face of the earth, but there will always be a rather significant market for them.

People bitching about its performance are the very same people who whine all day long about XIV alpha builds performance.

So the web browser in the days-old $500~$830 iPad is an alpha build? What the fuck?

commercials on mass media use laptop computers to represent "computers" as a whole.
The more I read this retardation the more I laugh.

Did you even watch the movie? Its html5 and its still under development.

It has nothing to do with the browser or the device itself.

And it works on everything but the devices Steve Jobs fellated as the future of the dynamic web. Y'know, the one without Flash. Because we'll all have HTML5. Or something.

This isn't even about performance. It just doesn't work. At all.

Because its not fucking optimized for mobile devices yet? asdsagadfngjasfhja do I have to spell every single thing out for you to comprehend?

Its not only Steve Jobs(!), its the whole industry shifting towards html5. Microsoft have been bitching about the security holes for much longer than Apple. You can continue fapping at old-fashioned, shitty flash technology.

We've got many years of fapping left to do before html5 can be considered a replacement for Flash/Silverlight.

I don't know why anyone is amazingly impressed with HTML5 so far... I guess I don't see much of a difference. Most of the 'wow' (using term loosely) stuff I've seen so far is just javascript...

Yes, it's in the development stages. In that respect, it has a LONG ways to go before one can truly say it can replace the current interactive environments we use now.

Latter. It's tongue-in-cheek. Not at HTML5, but rather the ipad's ability to use it.

Well, sheesh, Apple should have blocked it for ipad, just like flash, then. Imagine all the battery power it could save.

Oh joy you're almost getting it yourself: Without flash or HTML5, we're stuck with simple webpage browsing with no open video codecs supported and no way to use sophisticated internet applications outside of apps locked behind Apple's proprietary, closed, anticompetitive AppStore on their bleeding edge, flagship mobile devices.

Way to embrace the future of the internet, Apple.
