final life advice that applies to fitness as much as anything else: the way to get things done is to simply do them. you can fuck around with rationalizations and such, but people who get what they want get it by making it happen themselves. since gyms are macho, i'll point out that the same principle is especially easy to see with fighting. happily, my last experiences with violence were in college, but i learned pretty quickly growing up that when someone fucks with you, punching them in the face generally puts a stop to it--not because they're weaker than you or you're tougher than them (who knows if you are? i'm positive that i've subdued people who could have torn me apart in a controlled environment--in general, "winning" a fight doesn't prove anything, or at least not anything good), but because people are shocked that "oh fuck, that shit just happened."

edit: reasonable answer, no, just people who would try to start shit. i think it depends on how you conduct yourself, why you punch someone, and what kind of circles you run in. if you take steps to avoid conflict but people try to be schoolyard bullies and either intimidate verbally or with the threat of violence, swift, somewhat overboard violence as response usually shuts them down (so too with, say, guys that get out of hand at college parties and think they can unwelcomely grind on girls w/o consequences). if you run in a relatively violent or savvy group, trying to resolve conflict with swift, somewhat overboard violence will probably get your ass beat by multiple guys.

it's all relative to the situation. as i'm sure you know, especially if you have even the slightest experience with violence in a non-military/sports setting and have thought about it at all, most people walk around thinking that violence is a very foreign thing that can't happen. just letting them know it can happen (by doing it, not talking about it) is normally enough to stun them. emphasis on normally, because if you're like me (not particularly violent), you don't necessarily know who knows how to handle themselves and who doesn't, so if you abide by my policy over a long period of time, again, you're liable to get fucked up pretty bad. the best way to avoid getting fucked up is to avoid violence entirely.

the point was just that there's a great amount of power in simply doing something. it's a lot more powerful than reasoning with someone, unfortunately. it's also more powerful than rationalizing things to yourself, fortunately. the violence stuff was just a silly example. it should be noted that as an adult, in the majority of situations where what i described really would work (and i guarantee you it would; again, most people are shocked into inaction by actual violence), you would end up arrested for taking my advice. don't punch people, kids.
