This is the '12X Blu-Ray Star Trek Phaser' mod, by jayrob of Laser Pointer Forums. It was created by gutting a Playmates Classic Star Trek Phaser, filling it with the diode from a Pioneer BDR-205 blu-ray burner, and adding in a few sweet little features. While we're not sure it can be set to 'Kill', it looks cool as hell and even a reflected shot to the eye would instantly damage it. If this is your thing, be sure to check out the source!

To those commenting about hurting your eyes, that's why the start of the vid says 'proper eye protection needed'. Any laser you can see with your naked eye can hurt it, even if you're not the target of the laser (through both actually seeing the laser beam as well as specular reflections). The vid of the laser can still be painful to see if given in enough clarity, though no damage will occur since you're not actually being exposed to the radiation directly.


Real life always gets in the way of fantasy.


Other than how they made the laser, this isn't really new. Wicked Lasers has been selling this stuff for quite a while (granted, their toys cost a lot more than what it would cost to make something like this yourself), and how to create them has been cycling about for some time.
