I still don't see why it's an issue at all. The argument for sanctity of marriage goes out the door when I can get legally married 24/7 in a drive-through chapel in Vegas then divorced 24 hours later. I mean really. I'm done with the angry arguments overall, but that was always a glaring red problem that comes up for me when the "issues" of marriage are put up.

Also I find the concept of gay marriage a laugh. I don't get up from my gay bed to go to my gay classes in my gay car from the gay car corp to learn gay psychology so I can get a gay job and support my gay house payment so I can play gay videogames on my gay weekend. It's just marriage.

Sanctity of marriage argument has always been stupid, even without the 24/7 drive throughs. There's no legal definition of "sanctity", and there's no legal reason the government should follow a particular religion's definition of sanctity.

If people are talking specifically about marriage between two people of the same sex, would it bother you less if they used the term "marriage between two people of the same sex" instead of "gay marriage"?

Woozie, I'd rather just drop any reference altogether. Marriage is marriage. Then again civil unions across the US would work for me. All I really want out of it is so my eventual partner can share my benefits when that time comes. I couldn't give a shit if a priest or a city worker signed the paper, since all I care about is the eyes of the law.

And while I'd settle for that, it still irks me about the separate but equal thing. We tried that with education and that went just oh-so-well. The church as a whole has historically resisted all forms of change, from education to race to sex. I imagine, given this day and age, it'll only be a matter of time, but as I said, unions I would accept for now (if signed into national and not state law.)

(And I pick on the church in this case since the religious folks seem to be shouting the loudest against it, although any "right-wing" group could easily fit in its place.)

If we let gays make marriage gay, then we will no longer be able to marry as it will make us gay.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I would say though the issue (to me at least) isn't what churches believe, but that they are putting what they believe into law. (ie. separation of church n' state)

I have a problem with the state saying gays can't marry. I don't have a problem with a priest/minister/rabbi/etc. saying they can't get married in their church.

Didn't know I was against gay marriage. But, to be fair, in about 10 years time i would like to see the divorce rates compared straights. I think it will be pretty close to the same however.

That's not relevant in the slightest. If gay marriages have less of a divorce rate than heterosexual - should we not allow heterosexuals to marry because, you know, what's the point?

    /facepalm

The divorce rate is due to humans being humans, not sexuality.

Wow dude chill... I never said it was relevant. It's no different than looking the number for blacks or whites, or any other ethnic group.

Is it possible that the existence of federal recognition of marriage as an institution contributes to the divorce rate? Seems to be where Egon is going with this. If it could be shown that the marriage/divorce cycle wouldn't be as common if there were no additional rights/privileges given to it; the fight to 'legalize it' for group A/class B would be entirely moot. If getting married heterosexually in Maine conferred no benefits to a couple who moved to California, everyone would be in the same boat, basically.

Then of course, there's the question of 'who gives a shit about the sanctity of marriage, when the dissolution of marriage is as old an institution?' Stopping divorces is not something I wish to advocate, either.

Not really trying to say anything. I think it would just be interesting to see what the divorce % is. The few gay people I know don't seem to be in and out of relationships more or less than any straight couple, so that tells me the numbers would be the same. Then again, with many states not allowing gay marriage, it would make the gay couples more proud of their marriage, since not every gay couple can, which in turn may cause them to work harder in the relationship, and possibly be more selective in who they do marry.

I'm really sick of the religious heterosexism on marriage, but the truth is I really don't even want one.

If I had a magic wand I'd put everyone in the same boat with civil unions for your legal recognition of union, and as a corollary you have the option of getting a church-recognized marriage. Maybe I'm only speaking for myself, but the church can keep their marriages, I'm perfectly happy with equal unions in the eyes of the law.

Its been said a few times, and I will reiterate, seeking gay "marriage" is the first issue, as marriage is religious in connotation, and an issue in who can partake in it should be taken up with the religious heads, not the governments. Call it civil unions and pursue is solely on the grounds of civil rights violations. The ultimate granting of civil unions to homosexuals is on its way to being widely approved, its just a matter of time. The only states that will take a longer time to switch over are those that have even potential governors who campaign on ensuring all state licensing exams will be only in English...

I too find it asinine to argue for a system that recognizes two strangers that get drunk in vegas and wake up legally married in the morning as more legit than a gay couple of decades.
