Hero Quest and Final Fantasy was the closest I ever got to DnD, because I usually played HQ with my brothers and they'd get bored after awhile.
That game was pretty brutal with deaths too like if you walked through a wall that didn't lead into a room or was two blocks long you were just fuckin' dead.
