Here's what 2DBoy has to say about it (award-winning World of Goo dudes). I'd take their word for it.

I was trying to finish up Dead Space first, was planning on starting it tomorrow.

Btw Dead Space was really fantastic, it took about 4 hours to beat my first time through which unlocks Hard difficulty and New Game +. Getting all the achievements will require at least another 2 playthroughs, there's achievements for One Gun/Hard/and a 2 hour Speed Run one as well. All in all it was really impressive.

All the reviews I've read on S&S seem to say it's amazing, I'll post some impressions when I play it tomorrow. 5 bucks isn't a whole lot but I definitely know what you mean about the app store, it's so easy to justify purchases when games go on sale

How is $15.99 for FFIII overpriced to what I've read as being superior to the DS version which was $40? I can see them adding 4, 5, and 6 as long as people keep buying. I'm sold.

Ok just finished my first "session" of Sword & Sworcery, took about 30 mins and put me about 17% of the way through the game. Game is really fucking neat, there's a real sense of wanting to click on everything and explore every corner of each screen. The sound design/music is outstanding, I wouldn't even bother playing this without headphones even if it was just a cheap pair of earbuds. The game just draws you in, the combat is nothing special but overall the game oozes style and really pulls you in. I am hooked!

I feel like Sword and Sworcery is the closest thing to a 2D release from Team ICO.

I get the feeling Sword & Sworcery is going to lose a lot of its visual sharpness being played outside of an iPad/iPhone4(retina). I'll probably have to wait for a PC release sometime down the road.

I'll have to nab me Dead Space when I see it on sale, looking good. Anyone got some input on the FF13/Zelda clones by GameLoft? 99c is tempting, and I still need to nab Chaos Rings while it's on sale.

[EDIT] Looks like the Sacred Odyssy game is 3rd Gen touch at minimum, nvm. Will probably be on sale in the future if I ever upgrade, which I might do when iPad3 comes out in a year and people sell their 2s for cheap. There's no point in me getting a new Touch, and iPhone4 plans suck in Canada.

Both are supposed to be pretty good, although I hear Eternal Legacy (although reminiscent of FF13) feels a bit amateurish since Gameloft isn't exactly known for JPRGs.

Here, the video reviews for both games from AppSpy are pretty comprehensive:
    Eternal Legacy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTaja76756E
    Sacred Odssey: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1tv0YkN-pQ

There are free versions of both but considering they're both some of the best games on the iphone in their respective genres, 99 cents isn't so bad. I tried out both and I liked Sacred Odyssey a bit more (mostly because I think Chaos Rings is a better RPG than Eternal Legacy) but I probably won't buy either since I'm foolishly hoping the ipad versions will go on sale at some point.

So if I don't have an iPad, but plan on getting one after the semester is up, worth it to just spend the 99c on these games and keep on my itunes? or whatever?

I am not good with computers.

if you are getting an ipad in the future I wouldn't buy the iphone version of an app if there are ipad versions you can wait for. The ipad versions should go on sale at some point, maybe not for 99 cents but the difference between Sacred Odyssey (regular version) blown up 2x and Sacred Odyssey HD is pretty big graphics-wise. I would definitely not bite on Sacred Odyssey/Eternal Legacy until the HD versions go on sale unless you plan on getting on iPhone too and want to play it on that, or something.

That's pretty much what I did though, it took me like 3 weeks to get an ipad so I just made an itunes account and started buying stuff that was on sale, but you should definitely do your homework before you buy anything:

http://www.appspy.com - AppSpy, great site with video reviews
http://www.youtube.com/user/AppSpy?feature=chclk - direct link to their youtube channel

http://www.slidetoplay.com - Slide to Play, one of the bigger news/reviews sites
http://www.toucharcade.com - TouchArcade, another big one
    http://wireless.ign.com - eh

    http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=405311 - NeoGAF's iphone/ipad discussion thread

...and be warned that buying apps on sale gets really addictive, then starts to add up really damn fast lol

I'm mainly paying for what I can run on my Touch. Will bother with iPad specific ones when I get one in the future, as I don't mind blown-up visuals much.

At any rate, Chaos Rings is giving my 1G Touch a run for its money, heh. Roughly 10-15fps in all situations, but it's still very playable due to the design of the gameplay. Looks gorgeous on the small screen at any rate, was surprised how much detail they put in the player/enemy models.

I just wish Apple didn't remove the volume change option under the settings back on fw3.0 release. To adjust my volume if a game has no sliders, I have to quit the app, go into my music, play a song, then adjust the volume there, stop tune, exit music, then reload the app. They pretty much gave up on the early iPhone/Touch models at that point.

[EDIT] Oh thank god, I can turn the voices off in Eternal Legacy.

a couple more Dead Space screenshots:

I was really expecting a bunch of tiny corridors/internal areas in Dead Space but the game really surprised me, with some pretty big setpieces like a relatively expansive sewer area or a moving tram that you fight enemies on. Some of the level design is a bit questionable, as the game does feel like it's shuffling you from point A to point B even more than DS2... but with such amazing graphics, replay value, and slick controls (who would have thought Dead Space controls would translate so well to a touch screen) it's easy to overlook.

Anyway enough going on about Dead Space haha. Anyone ever play Helsing's Fire? I went through the whole first campaign last night, really amazing puzzle game.

I played the demo of it. Was alright, but it didn't pull me in that much.

Yeah... it looks neat in screenshots, but I felt that the gameplay got old pretty fast.

it gets pretty complicated eventually, with a shitload of mob types and 3 different tonic colors. I'm having a lot of fun with it, it's really well written and funny too

It was just one of those games that I enjoyed while playing through the (substantially long) demo, and when it was over, I decided that was all I cared to ever play of it. If you know what I mean.

It's also possible that I just didn't want to think any harder than that at the time since I usually play on my iPhone as I lay in bed at night.

Ooo, Dungeon Defenders: First Wave (tower defense meets action RPG, and it has online co-op) is 99 cents today. It's a universal app too.

Pretty sure they've patched the game substantially since this review was made. I've been waiting for this to come out on psn/xbl for forever but I guess I'll bite for a dollar.

Rolando and Rolando 2 are both on sale now, for 99 cents each. They're kinda akin to Loco Roco, with tilt controls and cutesy graphics/music. I've wanted to play Rolando for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately both are iPhone apps, but if the demo of Game Dev Story is any indication 2D games like that look fine blown up to 2x.

I played a little Dungeon Defenders today, it's a REALLY good game. The TD part is well done and it's fun to participate in battles and level up/collect gear, and the unreal engine makes everything look nice and pretty. My only complaint is the camera, which can be a little uncooperative in a hectic battle. Overall this is a pretty good deal for a buck.

Btw speaking of Game Dev Story, this looks really fucking cool. It's called Star Command, basically it's a ship simulator although I don't think it's the same devs as Game Dev/Hot Springs story. Comes out this summer:

There's an article about it over at IGN wireless too.
