When it comes to dnc tanking it's moreso conditional to which mobs you're up against. Keeping hate is not so much an issue with a decent enmity set, fan dance and a cure macro.
The issue, I agree, is maintaining tp. You really need a strong steps macro to compensate the general loss of acc and an occasional Shikkiyoko from a sam in order to maintain it there.
Carry an Icarus wing just in case or fire off your 2-hour and cure cheat away if you have to, but likely isn't needed.
So far have attempted in Dynamis and some t2 Vnm's, with a relatively large success, will be sure to try more as I can get the chance.

What mob is there that a Samurai or other DD-based tank couldn't, y'know, tank? You're talking about Shiki and I-wings being used and such, and it all seems so much effort for poor returns, when other jobs can do it better, and with less support. The mobs I see mentioned thus far aren't ones you "tank", they're just ones your DD pull hate on and survive against, like merit mobs and such.

Although I did mention the options of Shikki, wing, 2h, I have to admit I have yet to use those options. They are moreso for the situations that having 3 min to gain tp is not an option. Generally step tp will cover needs to maintain hate.
Again I have yet to try it out on anything harder, I'll try to convince my ls to let me (they let me do Blu tanking so it shouldn't be that hard) and I'll be sure to post the results.
